🌈 As Lesbian Visibility Week comes to an end, we honour Rose Powers and Sport A Rainbow.
At Alphabet Sports Collective, we believe in lifting up the people and organizations doing the work to support our queer and trans community in hockey spaces. Rose is one of those leaders.
“I’ve never been in such an inclusive and welcoming environment like a PWHL game… it’s like every game is a Pride Game.”
For many, this moment in hockey feels new. But for Rose—and so many others. It’s built on years of navigating spaces that weren’t always safe or supportive.
“There was no Women’s NHL, nowhere to strive towards; we played for the love of the game.”
Rose’s story is one of resilience. From facing discrimination as a coach to continuing to show up and lead, her journey reflects both how far the game has come and how far it still needs to go.
“A petition was started… to not allow me to coach because of my sexual orientation.”
And still, she stayed. She coached. She led. She created change.
Today, through Sport A Rainbow, Rose is actively reshaping sport culture:
“The pledge encourages us all to stand up against hateful speech and actions in sports, when safe to do so.”
Because language matters. Culture matters. Safety matters.
“What comes out of our mouths is something we are completely in control of and can change.”
Her work doesn’t stop there. Through Camp Sport A Rainbow, she’s creating affirming, joyful spaces for youth:
“As a youth mental health counsellor, I see the positive impact of having spaces where young people can be themselves and meet others just like them… Whether through our camp or in your local arena, Sport A Rainbow wants to help change the culture of sport.”
This is what community leadership looks like.
This is what changing the game looks like.
Because it’s about more than just the game.

🏳️⚧️International Transgender Day of Visibility is about celebrating trans people, amplifying trans voices, and recognizing the resilience, strength, and contributions of trans communities everywhere on and off the ice.🏒
We know that sport has the power to build belonging, confidence, and community. Everyone deserves access to that. We remain committed to creating safer, more inclusive spaces in sport where everyone can participate as their most authentic selves.

#transvisibility
🏳️⚧️ Visibility matters. Representation saves lives.
This Transgender Day of Visibility, we’re reminded of the power of seeing yourself in the game and knowing you belong in it.
Hearing from Harrison Browne is a reminder that hockey can be a space of courage, authenticity, and change.
At ASC, we’re committed to building a future where trans and gender-diverse people don’t just exist in sport, they thrive.
💬 One shift at a time.

TTHE Accessibility Workshop was offered to our community at Gibsons Arena March 5th 2026. We had the incredible @madison__mckenzie guiding us into the world of Sledge hockey; her journey, the rules, equipment and community. We started in the classroom and then moved down onto the ice where participants were fitted with safety equipment, sticks and sleds and then guided out onto the rink. If you get an opportunity to give Sledge a try, we highly recommend it! It felt like flying 🦅 It also helped us understand the athleticism involved in Sledge, and how to identify and help remove barriers to accessing the sport!!!
Thanks to @sportabilitybc for the equipment rental. They also hold try sledge hockey events!!*
