The art of tapping (TATAU) dates back over 2000 years and was on the brink of extinction in 1830 after Christianity arrived in Samoa.
Honor and special thanks to my Tufuga (tattoo artist) Su'a Peter Sulú'ape and the Sulú'ape family who has kept the Samoan tradition and the TATAU alive.
I'm going on my second week since I've received my Pe'a and I can still hear the tapping of the "Au". Waking me up in the middle of the night like an old friend reminding me to never forget.
People have been asking me about the pain level from 1 to 10, I'd have to say it's 100 😳. The first day for me was hard because I had nothing to gauge the pain on. I've broken or fractured a lot of bones playing in the NFL, but that pain doesn't even come close. I think the closest thing I could describe it as would be having a freshly open cut and someone taking a ruler and slapping that cut as hard as they could for 20 to 30 hours.
There's no explanation as to why someone would put themselves through this pain, other than the love for your culture, tradition and honor that it brings to your family. For me it was all that and a promise I made to my dying brother who was like a father to me.

I will be running sound & lights, and performing tonight at the event.
I look forward to partnering with Esera on many more events that provide safety, inclusion, and fun memories for our at-risk LGBTQ+ youth. This is super important to me personally.
