Intimacy w/ @hasmithson
Tomorrow at 3pm on @rtm.fm
Harry Smithson is an artist living and working in London. His work explores sonic structure, ritual and storytelling through performance, sculpture and sound - often hybridising all three in the form of installation. He draws upon a mixture of contemporary and historical references, ranging from the symbolism of Haley’s Comet, to Steven Spielberg’s movie ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind.’ Smithson uses these instances as touchstones within his work to consider wider themes of transformation, illusion, resonance and reoccurrence.
For Intimacy, he will be sharing a collection of sound works created over the last few years. Made using a variety of homemade and modified instruments and techniques, they range from sounds created by dissolving sculptures, a two piece suit modified into an electronic instrument, homemade Hurdy Gurdy’s, spinning speakers and a DIY modular synthesiser.

Come by and listen or lock in online to Kindred Radio today! (Tuesday 17th)
We have a performance from Harry Smithson who was interviewed as part of the exhibition publication designed by Izi Thexton
‘As an installation and sound artist, an integral part of my practice is housed in the building of DIY instruments. Primarily these are used as tools to create sound works, but also often become part of my multimedia installations, where I explore ideas of ritual, sonic structure and storytelling through interactions of sound, sculpture and imagery. These instruments range from a DIY air organ hacked together out of a toy melodica, a foot pump and blow up mattress, to a custom made speaker that rotates on a record player, paired with two microphones to create a constantly fluctuating feedback loop. My most notable instrument to date is a DIY modular synthesiser which I have slowly built from scratch over the past 10 years, and features extensively throughout my body of work.’
Tune in to hear some top tunes!
Read more of Harry’s feature about the DIY music community and building your own synth in the book that was launched as part of the show.
We have a great line up of DJs playing from 15:00-21:00 including participating designers David Chen and Alex Hatch

Performance & Installation by @hasmithson
Bed Organ, 2024 A work utilising a blow up bed, foot pump and melodica to create a DIY reed organ. The bed acts as a set of bellows to push air through the melodica, one performer lies on the deflating blow up bed while the second performer constantly attempts to keep it inflated using the foot pump and plays the melodica until the bed is eventually drained of air.
