Splish it! Thank you so very much Pallavi of @hameshaproject and Cindy of @uproot.teas for a super fun workshop of foraging and dyeing! I learned so much and now I canât wait to try my own indigo vat of dye. Itâs so magical, how it turns from green to blue with oxygen (air). Here you see a twisted piece of white silk jersey knit and an overdyed silk scarf that I initially dyed with avocado pits. It was so fun to dye with other dye enthusiasts, that in my next get-together, weâll do some dyeing at my house in Miraloma Park, San Francisco. Want to join?

My hands have been busy this month!
Every Sunday this month I sent the day learning new dye techniques with @cindydoedee and @hameshaproject . I had a great time meeting fellow nature enthusiasts and enjoyed learning more about east bay plants and mushrooms. đ
Wow what fun I had yesterday at the âForaged to Fabricâ natural dyeing workshop on location in the Temescal Regional Rec area in Oakland. I was so impressed with @cindydoedee âs knowledge of fungi and mushrooms. She gave us some turkey tail tea from her company, @uproot.teas . We hiked for a while, identifying different fungi. Then we dyed pre-mordanted linen and cotton tea towels with blackberry stems & leaves and also madder root from @dharmatradingco . It was so fascinating seeing all the different results! There were iron and baking soda baths for after-dipping. @hameshaproject had so much knowledge about natural dyeing! My tea towel is last in this reel. And I unintentionally added a heart in my scrunched up piece! I canât wait for the next 3 Sundays.

BONDS OF BANDHANI - i just completed my first residency! The last two months I got the privilege of learning natural dye techniques and bandhani with @hameshaproject
Exhibiting art yesterday was lowkey terrifying given I just learned this skills. But I am hella excited to keep practicing and get better at this art form. Doing this residency was such an experience and I am so grateful for the community we are building. Everyone in the residency was fireeee and I rlly hope you check their work out.
My piece is called âSupari/Kera Family Treesâ
These red and fuchsia tapestries/sarongs (reimagined sulus) bring together the betel palm, the banana tree, and family photographs to trace the intertwined lineages of Girmitiya and Indigenous Fijian peoples. These plants hold ceremonial and ecological significance for both communities, and by connecting them, I map how our shared relationship to these sacred plants existed long before they encountered one another and connect them. These plants are some of our earliest relatives, embedded in the fabric of daily life through foodways, rituals, and medicines.
The family photographs serve as living archives, showing faces of people who carried knowledge across oceans, rebuilt homes in unfamiliar soil, and adapted under the pressures of colonization, displacement, and the violence of forced labor. Pairing these images with the banana and betel palm reveals how cultural memory is held not only in our bodies but in the plants that sustained us. These photographs are not simply documentation. They are evidence of continuities, showing how Girmitiya and Indigenous Fijians developed relationships with one another, with the vanua, and with the wider ecology that held us all.
