While making these photographs, I learned about the Salton Sea - how it used to a popular destination for the rich and famous in the 1950s. However, by the 1970s, agricultural runoff and waste made the water toxic, causing communities to flee, leaving behind ghost towns. I wondered at how the illusion and glamour of a dream could turn into something else so quickly. The site itself became an apt metaphor for immigration. AMERICA FEVER: ROSE OF SHARON The national flower of South Korea - 무궁화 ‘mugunghwa’ - is renowned for its beauty and resilience. It is also known as the Rose of Sharon, which in Biblical allusions point to its ability to bloom in the desert. The woman arising from the hibiscus references the Birth of Venus, symbolizing the arrival of Korean immigrants into a harsh land to begin their new life. The modernized hanbok indicate a desire to transform while holding onto the vestiges of tradition, while the bottari (bundle of items) indicate the weight of the past that has to be brought into this new world. AMERICA FEVER: THE LOVERS While looking through archival family photos, I was constantly struck by the style and swag of Korean immigrants. Young immigrants were drawn to an idealized vision of the American life through US popular media, represented by fast cars and fancy clothes. I wanted to recreate a scene where a young couple, recently arrived in the US, sought to realize a romantic vision for themselves. We shot on a largely overcast day but for the last 15 minutes of light, the skies parted and gave us a dramatic sunset. 🥲 Creative/Photographer @hahnbo Producer @ashley.dasom Producer Assistant @sunnyparkphoto Wardrobe Styling @alexandriamontague ⚡️⚡️ Wardrobe Assistant @jeirjo Grooming @carlacsperez Talent @emureee @fellowugly 1st Photo Assistant @jaebin_cha 2nd Photo Assistant @initial.here.please BTS Video @shotbylianne #americafever #kodak #portra400 #mamiyarz67 #emanuelhahn

“America Fever” was a photo project conceived back in 2020. I felt a pull to explore the Korean-American immigrant experience through historical research, and combine it with world-building principles inspired by staged narrative photography and filmmaking practices. Over the course of 3 years, through the @google Image Equity Fellowship, @new_wave_art_residency and personal funding, I created a series of works to encapsulate the immigrant journey through 3 acts - Arrival, Striving and Reflection. After my solo show at @gobi.losangeles , I was satisfied with the body of work and ready to pursue something else. Then, came the surprise invitation to show America Fever at the annual exhibition @harpersbazaarkorea in Seoul with @nikkislee and @chrisunkim - artists that I respect immensely. My first Seoul exhibition was a dream. I’ve always felt that America Fever was best viewed in large prints, and seeing a whole floor for my work was a thrill. It moved me to see thousands of viewers connect with the pieces so intimately. Many people commented that they felt a strong emotional throughline in viewing these images. And surprisingly many people lingered to watch my short film Shortcuts too. So many people to thank. First and foremost, @smin_kang who saw the potential and decided to bring my work to Korea + curate a great a show. The entire @harpersbazaarkorea team @kyovark @parcjaewon @ahnsg_r3r3r @son___anna @_khu_ + more who worked tirelessly. Of course @j____eom and @david.j.wynn who supported me from the beginning. And all my collaborators on America Fever, who spent hours with me in strange places all over CA to work on this project. Excited for what’s next ❤️

Driving crosstown in LA traffic back and forth for almost 2 years to see each other. Numerous trips to New York, dreaming about moving together and finally doing it. Cooking a thousand meals while slow dancing and then watching shows/movies together. Envisioning a full and uninhibited life together and jumping in feet first holding hands. And finally, building a home together. I love you and your sweet heart Leah Sarnoff, my cabbage 💞 Thank you @abiraymaker for hiding out in the sweltering Jeju summer heat and snapping these!

More images from the latest series “Year of the Horse”. According to the Chinese zodiac, the metal horse (people born in 1990) is determined to go far in life and overcome challenges. The “metal” component refers to the world of ideas and concepts, which is prevalent in my work. I enjoyed discovering these hidden personal links to my own life through the research process. Thanks again to the wonderful cast and crew that made this shoot possible. For my upcoming photo show in Bazaar, I created new work entitled “Year of the Horse”. Drawing on the delusional journey of Don Quixote, and borrowing from surrealist painters like René Magritte and Jane Gaverol, a man is depicted at the twilight of his immigrant journey as he sits on a chair, flanked by a younger woman, who’s about to start on her own. The horse represents passageway into the afterlife and the man is surrounded by symbols of death such as the crow and snake. The young woman, covered in chainmail, fortified by the sacrifices of the previous generation, is ready to take on the new challenges ahead.
