This is the most important identity I will ever create in my life.
I feel beyond grateful to have been apart of developing the visual identity that honors the life and legacy of the 26 scotia miners and mine rescue members who lost and risked their lives 50 years ago. Where my grandfather, John Hackworth, was one of the lucky few to make it out of the first explosion on March 9th 1976 unscathed. Yet 2 days later on this day, the only surviving miner of the first explosion, to re-enter that same mine and help lead the recovery mission of the original 15 who died in the first explosion.
John along with 10 others unfortunately did not survive that recovery mission, where a second explosion occurred. Leaving the families of 26 miners devastated and an entire community and industry scared for ever.
If you know you me in the slightest you’ll know how important this moment was 22 years before my existence has impacted me, my life, and my work. I carry this reminder of John on my hands, as the Canary in the Coal Mine. For if it wasn’t for his selflessness and sacrifice would these hands never have to mine Kentucky Coal.

This year has been filled with many unexpected delights from beautiful people all around me. All tucked in my pocket.
Thank you for sharing a little piece of you this year by dropping a doodle in my wallet.

With football season in full pads, I thought I’d share some illustrations done for @hometowncov a while back. Stop by the shop, grab some old gear and relive the glory days we never had.
BTC Lewallen is a stackable, heavy sans-serif that draws its strength from heritage and grit, a tribute to the ghost sign of the Harlan Hotel, which first opened its doors in 1913 and closed in 1965. Built from the visual language of old masonry and hand-painted lettering, BTC Lewallen captures the hard-working spirit of the miners and travelers who once passed through the region, leaving their marks upon its walls.
BTC Lewallen is built to do a job. Its solid shapes work well in bold, graphic settings, from signage and packaging to short, punchy text. It doesn’t try to be elegant, and it doesn’t need to be. Its strength is in its simplicity and its tie to a specific place and time.
At its core, BTC Lewallen is about resilience: a piece of lettering shaped by a hard-working town, built to stand the test of time.

Long time no post. Been heads down making some tough stuff, like this one.
Oatly, Rapha, a ton of coffee, and a campaign that turned out a little grittier than planned.
Six cities, over 200 miles pedaled, and probably a million lattes downed.

In an attempt to create a physical archive of my favorite songs and sounds, what better way to start that off than with some of my favorites from the Mountain Maiden herself.
Growing up in a house full of old country records, and mixtapes my papaw made is something I took for granted. As I loved taking every tape out of their originally intended case and shuffling them around thinking it’d be be a funny surprise, not knowing how annoying it’d be to accidentally play a Ronnie Milsap album instead of Hank Jr.
I’m still working through more details of the archive itself but couldn’t help but share the first.
Poster for the infamous @catcasual and his cult of classic country cuts. The man is back in the great state of Kentucky spinning tunes at Louisville’s own @themerryweather on April 11th.

Taking a break from the regularly scheduled program of posting design projects to start sharing other things I enjoy and create.
About 6 or 7 months ago @k.elgusain and I found this beautiful vintage Gunlocke couch. Battered and almost completely destroyed, I decided to take on what’s come to be one of the longest furniture restorations I’ve ever experienced. So stay tuned as another 6 months may go by before this frame finally gets a new coat.
