Randomly stumbling upon what turns out to be the best gelato I’ve EVER eaten is something I thought would only ever happen in a romantic vision of wandering the streets of Italy on the kind of holiday I’ve dreamt of but never had. But last week I landed upon @tano.gelato in the most unlikely of locations and occasions and it was a beautiful reminder to play at being a tourist in your home city. Sure, turning down a dimly lit side street in Dalston toward a warehouse with the shutters down and a doorbell instructing you to ring for help finding gelato, doesn’t look quite like a scene from Eat, Pray, Love, but the irrepressible JOY I experienced as my gelato fantasies unfolded before me is something that could never be scripted. I could barely keep both feet on the ground as I giddily ummed and aahed between the Super Dulce de Leche or Dulce de Leche Granizado - the signature Argentinian milk caramel base spliced with dark chocolate shards - which I opted for alongside Banana Split (the freshest banana cream base with dark chocolate and great heaving globs of sticky sweet Dulce de Leche) and a 70% Peruvian dark chocolate sorbet. I’ve eaten a lot of gelato in London but never encountered anywhere as surprising and thrilling and unassuming as this. I was pretty ecstatic eating this and as soon as I got home, sent an email to @adammhyman to ask if @ruby.tandoh was updating the @vittlesmagazine Ice Cream Guide. Of course she’d already beaten me to Tano, and I was relieved it was on her radar. Their new residency at @tomspasta at Hackney Down Studios is going to be a great opportunity for more people to get a taste of the magic. I just hope it doesn’t become *too* much of a crowd magnet, because there is something so precious about a spot remaining at least *somewhat* hidden from plain sight. We chose Mash Studio for the Creative Retreat location very deliberately. It’s an inclusive space, supportive of LGBTQ+ creatives and designed to accommodate different ways of working, including neurodivergent approaches. It’s a brand neutral working studio, not a classroom. Used for shoots, content creation, and real creative process. The space is calm, flexible, and considered, which supports focus and clarity.
