When people ask what keeps me going or what motivates me to work harder, I often say it’s my family. While that is true, on a larger scale, I realize that what truly drives me is fear—the fear of dying and leaving my children with nothing to rely on, the fear of losing my spouse, either through death or the failure of our marriage, and the fear of having to raise my kids alone. Because of these fears, I hustle relentlessly, constantly seeking a sense of security. I convince myself that if I achieve success, if I accumulate enough, the impact of these fears won’t be as devastating if they ever come true.
I know this drive comes from deep-rooted trauma, from losing my father at a young age and witnessing my mother raise us on her own. I also saw how people tried to impose their values and beliefs on us, attempting to dictate how we should be raised. Alhamdulillah, we were fortunate in many ways compared to others in similar situations—our father left us with a few things, so we never had to worry about school fees or basic provisions. But I’ve seen how the lack of resources affects others, and I fear that if I don’t provide enough, my children will face the same struggles.
So, I hustle. It’s strange, though, because I know that true sustainability comes only from Allah, and what is meant for me will come to me. Yet, I can’t shake the worry.
