Guy Meldem is developing a collection of comfortable, functional furniture that is disturbed (or augmented) by sculptural and pictorial reflections. These objects, made from poor, raw, recycled, standard and readily available materials, are designed to be infinitely reproducible and sold at affordable prices.
The result of this work is presented in Meubles Meldem: a hybrid object between an artist's catalogue and an advertising mailing, 64 pages printed in cyan, magenta, yellow, black and fluorescent red.

The Radical Poetics of Materiality
In VC-Edition Nr. 17, Guy Meldem @guymeldem explores radical material honesty—celebrating immediacy, roughness, and improvisation. During a week-long workshop at ZHdK, BA Visual Communication students redefined what a lamp can be when freed from functional expectations.
The results are provisional luminous constructions—between function and fiction—built from mesh, posters, wire, and glue. Instability became method; experimentation became insight. This edition captures these gestures and experiments as a reflection on design as an act of thought.

This reissue includes 5 new design pieces and is produced in India. Cover printed on Sri Aurobindo Handmade Paper (various colours) and designed by Shayd Art, Sector 22-B, Chandigarh.

Hey there, busy June: I will show a chair at the Suspicious Objects exhibition opening at @fuse.zurich with @secondnature_design_projects in Zurich this Thursday the 12th. I will also show some chairs and a lamp at @basel.social.club opening this Sunday the 15th. And finally, even though I didn't win the price at the @swissdesignawards 💔, I am very happy about my display, so please come at the opening on Monday the 16th at the Messe.

Meubles Meldem is a furniture design and self-production project. The pieces are designed to be comfortable and functional, yet disrupted (or enhanced) by sculptural and pictorial reflections. Drawing inspiration from DIY cultures, sculpture and vernacular construction, its approach explores the boundaries between art and design.
Made from raw, recycled, standard and easily accessible materials, these objects are infinitely reproducible and sold at affordable prices. Each piece in the catalogue is made to order, produced in unlimited quantities, dated and signed. The production line is designed for quick, on-demand manufacturing to optimise costs and minimise waste by keeping inventory low. Everything is made locally in Apples and Lausanne. Work time is compensated fairly while striving to keep the furniture accessible to most people. These goals are achieved by reducing construction time, limiting the range of materials used, and incorporating recycled materials whenever possible. In a world increasingly shaped by neoliberal market logic, this project is a way of breaking free from it.

In Plain Sight showcases furniture and sculptural objects that embrace the unassuming. Rooted in appropriation, the legacy of the ready-made, and objets trouvés, these works move beyond conceptual declarations to critically engage with material excess, recontextualization, and reinterpretation.
Through playful gestures, minimal interventions, and subtle provocations, they transform neutral industrial components, discarded items, and surplus materials. By shifting contexts, they reveal new aesthetic potentials and unexpected object typologies.
Here, “sight” becomes an active process—a dialogue between seeing, understanding, and experiencing. In John Berger’s words: “The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.”

Vous êtes cordialement invitéexs au finissage de l’exposition «Meubles MMMEOLYDAREDM» ce vendredi 15 novembre à la Villa Moyard à Morges @la_villa_moyard , à partir de 18h30.
La Villa Moyard accueille Meubles Meldem pour une collaboration particulière. À cette occasion, Guy Meldem a travaillé avec les ateliers de restauration Moyard pour revisiter l’un des fauteuils de sa collection. Il a pu s’appuyer sur le savoir-faire unique de l’équipe, en particulier du tapissier Yves Bally, de l’ébéniste Garry Chételat et du designer Mathieu Winkler. Ils ont ainsi pu explorer une large gamme de techniques artisanales, des plus traditionnelles aux plus contemporaines. Le résultat est une série de six fauteuils, similaires dans leur conception, mais aux qualités nettement distinctes. Du pin au chêne, de la mousse PU au crin de cheval, du flocage au velours, et de la rondelle au clou Louis XIII, chaque pièce se distingue par des particularités techniques et économiques propres à chaque matériau et méthode.
