Frankenstein Friday! Some keyframes done for @gdtreal incredible FRANKENSTEIN! Early on before production started I worked with Guillermo on a series of keyframes for the film, some proposed scenes like the creature rising from a lab tank would never pan out, while others like the key of the lab tower destruction were done after I had designed the exterior medusa mural (incorporating @panfilova.art amazing 3D model)! Some more concept designs done for @gdtreal wonderful FRANKENSTEIN film! Working as Head of Concept Design I got to create a variety of concepts for different departments, including the ornate beds for Victor’s mother and father along with Leopolds chair, medical bag and Harlanders saucy cane topper! The beds were based on historical frames we found during location scouting of castles and manor houses overseas. Adapting them in early sketches along with the Mothers grave that would also mimic Victors laboratory tower. Leopold’s chair was based around a chair found by the amazing Set Decorator @perro1324 with new carvings designed for front and back. Once these final concepts were approved by Guillermo they would move to @tamdev wonderful art dept to work up in detail for fabrication. The Creatures Early Tale~ Early concept and form designs for @gdtreal amazing FRANKENSTEIN! Before production officially started; a small team of GDT, myself, @katehawleycostume , Oscar Chichoni and @mikehill_creations worked in an LA office on early designs for the film. The Gargoyle’s Tale~ along with Victors Lab Tower, I also did concept designs for the gargoyles and drainage spout the Creature escapes from for @gdtreal incredible FRANKENSTEIN! Inspired by real gargoyles of the period, we kept in the mythological motif of the towers medusa with the drainage spouts harpies ( nicknamed the “vomiting harpy nuns” ) ;) The Guillermo approved gargoyle designs would be rendered in @tamdev amazing art dept by the wonderful @tsangstagangsta while I provided notes and drawovers to keep them on model before being built and added to the giant Tower miniature and separate closeup spout miniature! @frankensteingdt #guillermodeltoro #guydavis #guydavisart #conceptdesign #conceptdesigner #conceptart #frankenstein #netflix
The Tower’s Tale~ a few of the concept designs I did for Victor’s Lab Tower from @gdtreal amazing FRANKENSTEIN! During early production scouting for castle locations, I pitched the Wallace Monument in Stirling, Scotland to Guillermo as a possible basis for Victors Lab. Guillermo like the iconic silhoutte from the start and we started revising the form and details~ by the end of the 2 week scouting we had the basic lab design, including the “sphinx feet” later added with curled stonework from another real life location detail. As production continued we would add and refine details, later working with amazing Production Designer @tamdev and her great art dept including Sorin Popescu ; giving them drawovers and notes from Guillermo revising it more as the tower was finalized before being built into an incredible (and huge) practical miniature.
