LOOOOONG Text Warning:
Today’s a big day for me. It’s the one year anniversary of me really taking control of my health (see the streaks in the My Fitness Pal and Whoop). A year ago, I sat here and realized that for the first time in over two decades I wasn’t going to be starting the process of learning a marching show on August 1st. I had resigned from Reagan to start my consultant business the previous May, but went straight into my “normal” summer activities, so it wasn’t until the end of July that things finally felt “different”.
It caused me to reflect on my “why,” my purpose. My biggest goal, is to be there for Marianne and Sloane. That’s true in the present, and it’s true 20, 30, 40 years from now (God willing). So I made some changes.
I started drinking less, started tracking everything that I ate, started working out with purpose. Prioritized the long time-horizon for a goal I knew would take a time frame I couldn’t fathom at the start. That meant consistency over perfection.
There were plenty of bumps. Overindulgences during social meals, a couple small injuries, challenges while traveling. But I stayed consistent.
I lost 100 pounds in the last year (see the two Disney photos for a before/after from February 2024 to 2025). And I can’t wait to see what this body can do next as I continue to work my goals for my family and my future!
If you’ve made it this far - thanks! And you have the capacity for this too. Maybe you don’t NEED to lose this kind of weight. But I bet there’s something you wish was different about your life. Wake up earlier, run a half marathon, bench press your body weight, feel confident in your body at the beach. Whatever. One thing I’ve found in this journey is that we massively overestimate what we can do in one month and massively UNDERestimate what we can do in a year. Consistency > Perfection.
There’s no secret weapon, but if you ever want someone to encourage you as you find your footing in your own health, reach out. I’d love to be in your corner ✌️
These awesome students will be graduating Summa Cum Laude this May-I wish we could be together to celebrate them this week but I will still celebrate them from afar!
Today, my unbelievable wife @mariannecwhite carried me across the finish line of our third marathon. I hobbled through 26.2 miles on injured legs. That, plus an electrolyte imbalance post race made today one of the hardest of my life. I honestly don’t know what I would do without Marianne in my life and I needed everyone to know how lucky I am to share each day with her.
This was a special weekend. Not only did I have three groups compete at @fischoffchambermusic competition, but I was constantly inspired by the artistry and camaraderie shown by all performers. These Texas kids really made me a proud teacher. Probably most special of all was to hear the grand prize WINNING concert of @willpyle and the @arunaquartet . I’m proud to call these incredible men my friends, but I will never forget Will (flat in the upper register) working his tail off every day in the Reagan Band Hall. Clearly, that never changed, and my heart busts with pride for what he’s accomplished. Bravo to all, and I can not wait until all of our paths cross again. #fischoff2019 #TeamTexas
Excited to be presenting a session on #chambermusic with the incomparable @geeeelok - “Chamber Music: The Why and How” this December at the 73rd Annual @themidwestclinic in Chicago, Illinois
