One year of The People’s Patch 🌱💚 Last Thursday we celebrated our first anniversary — and all the people, partners, and volunteers who have helped this space grow into what it is today. ✨ 101 sessions (and counting!) ✨ 748 participants ✨ 2,492 volunteer hours ✨ 774 hours supporting young people This space is built on collaboration, with huge thanks to our partners @cvlifecoventrynews , @vacoventry , @wearecreativekindness , @fothergillsuk , and @segroplc , alongside so many others who have supported the project in different ways. As Dan Holford, Head of National Markets at SEGRO, shared: “SEGRO’s continued support of local environmental projects in Coventry reflects our long-term commitment to the area, delivered through our Coventry Community Investment Plan. The People’s Patch is a particularly meaningful initiative, demonstrating what can be achieved when local partners collaborate for the wider benefit of the community. SEGRO looks forward to continuing its partnership with Groundwork West Midlands, with further funding committed to enhancing other areas for community use.” We were also delighted to be joined by @marycreagh1 , Minister for Nature and Coventry East MP, who said: “The People’s Patch is a brilliant example of how we can all do our bit so the community can benefit… we can all do something.” A special highlight 💚 We also presented certificates to our volunteers to recognise the time they’ve given. Did you know that around 97% of flower-rich meadows have disappeared since the 1930s? 💔 That’s a huge loss of vital habitat for bees, butterflies and other wildlife. This May, #NoMowMay is a simple way we can all help reverse the decline. 💚 By pausing the mower and letting grass and wildflowers grow, even in small patches, we can create important spaces for pollinators to feed and thrive. 🐝🦋🌼 It’s a small action with wide-reaching benefits — supporting biodiversity, reducing maintenance, cutting carbon emissions and creating greener, calmer spaces for everyone to enjoy. This week we’re proud to celebrate one year of the People’s Patch Coventry 🌱 What was once an overgrown, underused space has been transformed into a thriving community hub—supporting wellbeing, connection, and local engagement. Over the past year, it’s hosted everything from planting sessions and pumpkin carving to “Wellies in the Woods” and apple crumble making, bringing people of all ages together. The Patch has grown far beyond our original vision, shaped by community ideas and input. It now features accessible paths, food-growing spaces, raised beds, seating, and a welcoming event area with a polytunnel. The wider green space is also being used as a community orchard, an event space, and a place for children to learn about nature and their community 🍃 This transformation has only been possible thanks to the incredible support of our partners: @cvlifecoventrynews , @segroplc , @fothergillsuk , @wearecreativekindness , and @vacoventry —thank you for being part of the journey. Out and about with our Nature Recovery team over the past couple of weeks 🐦🌿 We’ve been running birdwatching sessions across our nature reserves in the West Midlands—helping people slow down, get outside, and connect with nature. From spotting robins, sparrows, magpies, and great tits to learning the basics of bird calls, it’s been great to see so many people getting involved and enjoying the experience.
