š± International Compost Awareness Week is here!
This week is all about celebrating the power of composting and how simple everyday actions can help create healthier soil, greener spaces, and stronger communities.
Across our county parks and community spaces, composting helps turn natural green waste into something powerful ā nourishing the land, supporting wildlife, and helping our green spaces thrive for everyone to enjoy.
At Groundwork West Midlands, this work connects directly with our People Patches ā community growing spaces where people come together to grow food, share skills, and care for nature. Composting sits at the heart of it all, helping us give back to the soil while building something positive together.
Whether youāre visiting a county park, growing in a People Patch, or starting a compost bin at home, youāre part of the change.
Letās keep it simple: waste less, compost more, and grow greener together šæ

One year of The Peopleās Patch š±š
Last Thursday we celebrated our first anniversary ā and all the people, partners, and volunteers who have helped this space grow into what it is today.
⨠101 sessions (and counting!)
⨠748 participants
⨠2,492 volunteer hours
⨠774 hours supporting young people
This space is built on collaboration, with huge thanks to our partners @cvlifecoventrynews , @vacoventry , @wearecreativekindness , @fothergillsuk , and @segroplc , alongside so many others who have supported the project in different ways.
As Dan Holford, Head of National Markets at SEGRO, shared:
āSEGROās continued support of local environmental projects in Coventry reflects our long-term commitment to the area, delivered through our Coventry Community Investment Plan. The Peopleās Patch is a particularly meaningful initiative, demonstrating what can be achieved when local partners collaborate for the wider benefit of the community. SEGRO looks forward to continuing its partnership with Groundwork West Midlands, with further funding committed to enhancing other areas for community use.ā
We were also delighted to be joined by @marycreagh1 , Minister for Nature and Coventry East MP, who said:
āThe Peopleās Patch is a brilliant example of how we can all do our bit so the community can benefit⦠we can all do something.ā
A special highlight š
We also presented certificates to our volunteers to recognise the time theyāve given. Time is precious, and we are so grateful to everyone who chooses to spend theirs with us ā you are what makes The Peopleās Patch such a welcoming and creative space šæ
Hereās to continuing to grow together š»

Did you know that around 97% of flower-rich meadows have disappeared since the 1930s? š Thatās a huge loss of vital habitat for bees, butterflies and other wildlife.
This May, #NoMowMay is a simple way we can all help reverse the decline. š By pausing the mower and letting grass and wildflowers grow, even in small patches, we can create important spaces for pollinators to feed and thrive. šš¦š¼
Itās a small action with wide-reaching benefits ā supporting biodiversity, reducing maintenance, cutting carbon emissions and creating greener, calmer spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Whether itās a garden at home or a shared outdoor space, could you leave a little area to grow this month and let nature take the lead? šæ

This week weāre proud to celebrate one year of the Peopleās Patch Coventry š±
What was once an overgrown, underused space has been transformed into a thriving community hubāsupporting wellbeing, connection, and local engagement. Over the past year, itās hosted everything from planting sessions and pumpkin carving to āWellies in the Woodsā and apple crumble making, bringing people of all ages together.
The Patch has grown far beyond our original vision, shaped by community ideas and input. It now features accessible paths, food-growing spaces, raised beds, seating, and a welcoming event area with a polytunnel. The wider green space is also being used as a community orchard, an event space, and a place for children to learn about nature and their community š
This transformation has only been possible thanks to the incredible support of our partners: @cvlifecoventrynews , @segroplc , @fothergillsuk , @wearecreativekindness , and @vacoventry āthank you for being part of the journey.
The Peopleās Patch is a powerful example of what can happen when communities and organisations come together with a shared vision. Watch the video to see how far itās come š„
