As a charity, Groundwork has a long track record of supporting children and families to live healthier lives through practical, community-based approaches to food. From growing and cooking to building confidence and connection around healthy eating, our work is rooted in what works for communities. This includes working with schools to embed food growing, supporting families through community hubs, and helping young people develop skills and independence through hands-on learning. Our partnership with Tesco builds on that work, helping to ensure even more communities are able to benefit, and has seen us work together to support community groups across UK with £133m in funding since 2015. Our national programme, Wellies in the Woods, gives all children the opportunity to play, explore and thrive in safe outdoor spaces. No matter where they live. Across the country, many families face real barriers to outdoor play. Here at Groundwork, we bring families together through exciting, accessible sessions that help parents and their children overcome barriers to the outdoors and instil habits that can last a lifetime. Where learning about the environment becomes an adventure, and sessions encourage imaginative thinking, development and play, we create transformative experiences. By supporting a session, you could help more children experience the magic, wonder and joy of Wellies in the Woods. Through your support, we could reach more families, inspire young minds, and give more children the chance to thrive outdoors. Together with NPC, we are releasing a report warning that the label ‘green jobs’ risks discouraging some young people from seeking roles in one of the UK’s fastest-growing sectors. This report outlines key findings on the disconnect between young people and opportunities in the green economy, including the fact that young people from low-income backgrounds want stable, well-paid careers, but some assume that ‘green’ jobs are poorly paid or only accessible to those with a university degree. These misconceptions risk excluding them from long-term, rewarding work opportunities. Graham Duxbury, Groundwork UK's Chief Executive, outlines that “As we move to a more sustainable economy, we’ll need more capacity and new skills in growing sectors such as nature recovery, energy efficiency, and the circular economy. We also know from our programmes that, with the right support, young people with barriers to employment can flourish in these roles – building their confidence, connecting with their communities and improving their health and wellbeing. “Maximising this opportunity means overcoming misplaced perceptions and providing better ways into entry-level roles with real prospects for progression. Many young people are motivated by a desire to work in a job that helps safeguard their future. Our responsibility is to make sure those jobs are more widely accessible, financially rewarding, and provide gateways to good careers.” To find out more and read our full news story, click the link in our bio.

Though she enjoyed gardening as a child, when Vicky developed hay fever, she lost her joy of the outdoors and became wary of insects. Despite her initial reluctance, Wellies in the Woods encouraged her to get back outdoors with her daughter, Kylah. For Vicky and her daughter, Wellies in the Woods is now an opportunity to bond. Enjoying arts and crafts, going on bug hunts, and making crowns, Wellies has taught both Vicky and Kylah that bugs aren’t as scary as they thought. Since attending the sessions, they’ve seen a huge difference. Now Vicky plans to go camping with their whole family, which is something she would have never considered before! By fundraising for Groundwork, you can help more families like Vicky and Kylah thrive outdoors and enjoy transformative sessions that encourage bonding, exploration, and adventure. From the 1st of May, we’re kicking off our Wellies and Wander challenge. By walking 1 mile a day for 30 days, you’ll help more children like Kylah experience the joy of the great outdoors.
