Review: One of the most skeptical people I know once surprised me by saying, "Moving your hand is an act of telekinesis." Maybe you can scrape together a story from high school biology about action potentials, ATP, and actin. But the question William James asked 150 years ago—how the thought of an act becomes the act itself—remains. This mystery isn't merely a philosophical question, but one of the most urgent crises we face today as information, media, art—maybe even all our jobs—dematerialize with the rise of AI. What's the point of making things with our hands anymore, of turning mind into matter? - Scott Snibbe @museumofcraftanddesign @ssnibbe @sydney_cash @gregoryclimer @filmquilts @richardvijgen @laurenkalman @szazai._ #VideoCraft #MuseumOfCraftAndDesign #RoborantReview #ScottSnibbe #ContemporaryArt #SanFranciscoArt #BayAreaArt #MuseumExhibition #ArtReview #Craft #CraftAndDesign #TextileArt #FiberArt #VideoArt #NewMediaArt #ExperimentalFilm #CeramicArt #MaterialCulture #ArtInSanFrancisco #SeeItInSF

Take a final behind-the-scenes peek at one of the captivating artworks in “Video Craft.” Watch MCD Lead Preparator Jeremiah Barber (@_jeremiahbarber_ ) and team as they install, or rather “drop” Greg Climer’s (@gregoryclimer ) 250-foot-long “Knitted Film.” Climer’s work reverses our relationship to time and media. His “Knitted Film” strip slows down the change of expression of his friend acting in front of the camera. In turn, it perhaps suspends or softens the emotional reaction experienced by a viewer. There's also a short video that goes with this piece. Visit MCD to experience “Knitted Film” alongside other outstanding works in “Video Craft,” featuring 19 artists at various stages of their careers. Learn more about “Video Craft” and get your tickets through the link in our bio! *Elements designed by Freepik are used in some of the visual identity and marketing media for the “Video Craft” exhibit.

Tomorrow is the opening of Video Craft at the Museum of Craft and Design. I’m showing 36 quilts and nearly 250 feet of knitting. Together, these two large-scale works create about 60 seconds of animation. Seeing them installed in the gallery has been surreal. When I first started making art, I never imagined a museum would show my work. I certainly never imagined professional art handlers installing it — and doing it far better than I ever could. It’s humbling to watch an idea that once felt slightly impossible become real, and to see a team of thoughtful, skilled people bring it to life. Heres some photos of the installation in progress. Thank you to MCD for the invitation, and for the care and precision in installing these two massive pieces. Thank you Sarah and Ariel. Video Craft is curated by Sarah Mills, PhD, and Ariel Zaccheo, and brings together artists across generations exploring the shared formal and technical language of video, film, and craft. Honored to be included alongside: Danielle Andress (@danielle_andress ) Sydney Cash (@sydney_cash ) Gregory Climer (@gregoryclimer ) William Cobbing (@william.cobbing ) Kelly Egan Sabrina Gschwandtner (@filmquilts ) Kira Dominguez-Hultgren (@kiradominguezhultgren ) Lauren Kalman (@laurenkalman ) Beryl Korot Ahree Lee (@ahreelee ) Jodie Mack (@jodiemack ) Aarron Marcus Kate Nartker (@knart ) Megumi Naitoh (@meguminaitoh ) Senga Nengudi (@senganengudi ) Sarah Rosalena (@sarah_rosalena ) Richard Vijgen (@richardvijgen ) Jennifer West (@jwest20011 ) Shaheer Zazai (@szazai._ ) I’ll post photos from the opening over the weekend.

“Video Craft” Opens this Month! Save the Date for a Special Opening Day Event We’re very excited for “Video Craft,” a new exhibition curated by Sarah Mills, PhD, and Ariel Zaccheo, MCD Curatorial Director. “Video Craft” explores the formal and technical properties that video, film, and early moving image technologies share with more traditional craft media like ceramics, textiles, and glass. Mark your calendar for an Artist Talk on the opening day, Saturday, February 28. Get an insider perspective with curators Sarah Mills, PhD, and Ariel Zaccheo, followed by a conversation with exhibiting artists Kira Dominguez-Hultgren, Kelly Egan, and Kate Nartker. Today I learned that a pandemic mask I made for my friend Roderick has quietly found its way into the International Quilt Museum in Nebraska. I didn’t know. I’m stunned, grateful, and a little emotional. We make something, send it off, and life carries it places we never planned. This mask was made from cotton scraps in my studio for a friend and traveled to Nebraska without me even knowing. Work really does take on its own path once it leaves our hands. Seeing the other masks, I’m struck by how much care, time, and tenderness is stitched into each one. Those were difficult days, but they brought out the resourcefulness & community in all of us. Thank you to the museum and curator for holding this chapter of our collective memory with such beauty. And thank you, Roderick, for sharing your mask. May we never need them again. Can you all pick out which one is my work? @internationalquiltmuseum @roderick752 #QuiltArt #ContemporaryQuilting #TextileArt #FiberArt #QuiltArtist #ModernQuilting #ArtQuilt #ArtTextiles #SewingCommunity #CraftAndDesign #HandmadeStories

I learned fashion through pattern cutting — building shape, solving puzzles in cloth. That’s always going to be my core. Its also the funnest part of the process. But the last few years have shifted me toward engineered prints: where the textile and the body converse; where print becomes structure. Floral and botanical forms keep showing up. Even the plaids are watercolor instead of solid lines. Maybe it’s California trying to re-root me. Maybe it’s nostalgia for my NYC garden. Maybe the quilts are seeping into my wardrobe. Maybe it’s all of the above. Or, its as simple as I love a giant, oversized floral print. These shirts feel like chapter one. Since making them, I’ve already pushed the work further — but I love them as a reminder of the fundamentals before things get wilder. More images to come. And, all the fabrics were designed and custom printed by me! Endless gratitude to @betterrugged for the images, and to Rick and Javid for wearing these with such presence. . . . #fashiondesign #menswear #engineeredprints #patterncutting #textiledesign #surfacedesign #tendermasculinity #artistssupportingartists #sanfranciscoartist #bayareaartists #gregclimer

On this week in 1998 — 27 years ago — Matthew Shepard was murdered. He was brutally tortured, tied to a fence, and left to die. He was 21. I was 19. His death transformed all the shame and fear around being gay (remember, this was the South, and before Truvada) into something even more visceral — the fear of violence. It was another form of lynching. The Westboro Baptist Church showed up at his funeral to “protest.” What were they protesting, exactly? The grief of a family mourning their son? The idea that a gay man’s life could be worthy of love and sorrow? People came dressed as angels, their white wings forming a wall to shield Matthew’s family from the hatred. They protected them. That act — the clothing, the gesture, the quiet during a storm — remains one of the most powerful examples of what fashion can do. In 2019, I drove to Laramie, Wyoming, to visit the spot where Matthew was left to die. It’s not as rural as I’d imagined. The site is unmarked — the landowner prefers forgetting over allowing others to grieve. But i was there. Like all pilgrimages, it was anticlimactic when I arrived: an empty field, the fence long gone, a faint unease about gun violence because i was trespassing in Wyoming. But the meaning wasn’t in the destination — it was in the drive there. The reflection. The discomfort of thinking about all of these things for over 1000 miles. The recognition of who I had become in the 20 years between his murder and that quiet field was important. We erase things so quickly these days. Matthew’s murder once sparked national conversations, an award-winning play (The Laramie Project), and even a song by Amy Ray (“Laramie”). Yet his name is now unknown to so many in a younger generation. Erasure seems to be accelerating. Don’t let this happen. When we erase our history, we are forced to relive it — and to relearn the same painful lessons we should already know by heart.
