Had a lovely afternoon today helping out with the Graphic Brighton: Refugee Comics event. I always enjoy comics studies events and it’s wonderful that there’s consistently so many down here to visit and explore. So many fantastic people to meet and learn from.

Another crossover project between GNRR and @theuniversityofsheffield , a little display at today’s Translations, Tension and Togetherness: A Focus on International Knowledge exchange event. This is part of my work to promote comics and visual storytelling in general as means for academic communication, and finding a lot of interest! There will also be graphic scribing in action by @beka_haytch , looking forward to seeing it live for the first time 😊 #comics #zines #graphicnovels #gnrr #readingroom #gnrrontour #university #knowledgeexchange

THE CHAGOS BETRAYAL By FLORIAN GROSSET published by @myriadeditions WINNER — 2022 Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing “A shocking graphic novel account of poverty and discrimination suffered by the Chagos Islanders when their eviction by the British enforced US military control of their Indian Ocean home. During the cold war, the US government sought to establish an overseas military presence in the Indian Ocean. This graphic novel is a shocking account of British complicity in the forced exodus of the Chagos Islanders from their homeland to make that plan possible.” To find out more about adaption of this or any of our titles visit or contact [email protected] #author #graphicnovel #politics #pagetoscreen #adaptation #governmentcorruption #discrimination #film #series @gowitheflo19 #booktoscreen #basedonthebook #bookadaptation #chagosislands #chagos #decolonisation #breadandrosesawardforradicalpublishing #breadandrosesaward

⚠️ FREE FOR SCHOOLS It takes a while to post on the actual grid as most of my work is moving offline. BUT I had to come back with this!!! Schools — this is the #DisruptiveCollection. 📣 BOOKS ON EMPIRE KS3+ — The Chagos Betrayal by @gowitheflo19 🥀Bread & Roses Award 2022 KS2+ — Stolen History by @sathnamsanghera ✅️ Teacher Resources The Tories' stance on how we teach Empire was clarified last year by Kemi Badenoch, who threatened schools with criminal proceedings if they did not teach "the benefits of Empire." In this ongoing culture war, Badenoch argued that "pointing fingers would not change the past and that a society that looked at everything through race was never going to be at ease with itself." This position is designed to turn modules on EMPIRE into “recreation … a place that we go for comfort, a place to make us feel good about ourselves.” We gloss over colonialism and depict racism as a historical artefact rather than a current and lived reality, and in doing so, we fail our young people. Understanding this history, 𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘶𝘨𝘭𝘺, "is essential to Britain becoming a saner country," and we would love to provide the tools. 📣 BOOKS ON THE 'REFUGEE EXP' EYFS/ KS1+ — Homeland: My Father Dreams of Palestine by @hannahmoushabeck EYFS/ KS1+ — To The Other Side by @erikadraws ✅️ Teacher Resources In a world where we are told to see refugees as the “other,” we need classrooms to see that 'they' are 'us'. Rishi Sunak's immigration bill, praised by neofascist parties, was passed last month. Standing behind a 15ft metal fencing and two sets of guarded gates, the floating prison that is — Bibby Stockholm — opened last week. There is NO TIME to be complacent. "You have to be able to talk about the refugee experience with kids, or it will hamper their ability to be humane.” @davidobowles These books are not for your classroom libraries but for adding context to your lessons. If you're a #HeadTeacher, #HistoryLead, or the decision maker for KS* — get in touch. If you're a "friend" of a "friend," please sit this one out!!!! Brutal .... I know. We need these books in lesson plans, not on your grid✌🏾

Here’s a new book for you to read this Friday at the next GNRR. The Chagos Betrayal: How Britain robbed an island and made its people disappear by Florian Grosser. This book is a perfect example of why I like comics so much. First of all, I would have never even found out about this story and the people of Chagos if it wasn’t for this book- I still get a huge amount of my knowledge from non-fiction comics. The story is both personal and historical, it gave me a window into a small slice of the past that demonstrates so much of what’s wrong with the world today: money over people. But when it’s your people and your ways of life that get extinguished in the interest of some larger national or business interest… we’ll the effects are devastating. I could have read about this (maybe) in the news or might have listened to a podcast. But these formats wouldn’t contain all the non-verbal information that is communicated through the visual aspect of this book: the colours, the people, the environments - when it comes to real life stories, it’s best not to leave things to the imagination but have a direct visual reference to understand the experiences of people. If all of this sounds a little vague, just read the book and you’ll understand what I mean. Thank you @myriadeditions and @corinnepearlman specifically for donating this book to GNRR and thanks to @gowitheflo19 for creating it and sharing this important story with the world in such a beautiful format. #comics #comic #nonfiction #nonfictioncomics #graphicnovel #graphicnovels #gnrr #readingroom #chagos #chagosislands

Went to Thought Bubble festival and all I got was this lousy haul 😍📚🤩 It was a pretty full on sensory experience but well worth it! It was great to say hi to people I knew and introduce GNRR to some new people and projects. As nerve-wrecking as it all was, it was good to get out of my comfort zone and being wing-women to each other with @mklfreeman - safety in numbers 😂 Thank you so much to everyone who donated books to GNRR, I’m ever so grateful!!! 🙏 @thoughtbubblefestival @myriadeditions @castironbooks @junctiongraphicnovel @lizziehkaye @corinnepearlman @nicolast.reeten @adhouse @matthewdooleydraws #comics #comic #comiccon #tbubs2022 #graphicnovel #graphicnovels #readingroom #gnrr #bookhaul #comicshaul #bookstagram #comicstagram #harrogate

Powerful, moving and topical. These debuts tell the stories of two displaced populations, and the long-lasting effects they’ve endured following the loss of their homes.  THE ROLES WE PLAY by @sabbakhanart is an exploration of what identity, belonging and memory mean for her and her family. She paints a vivid snapshot of contemporary British Asian life and investigates the complex shifts experienced by different generations within migrant communities. 📚📚📚 THE CHAGOS BETRAYAL by @gowitheflo19 is a shocking account of British complicity in the eviction of the Chagos Islanders from their homeland following the US government’s bid to establish an overseas military presence. Grosset expertly highlights the poverty and discrimination that the Chagossians have encountered throughout their fight for the right to return home.    Get your copies today for your chance to win the complete set of our 2021 releases!

What a beautiful yet heartbreaking book!!🌺 AD-PR Thanks so much to @myriad_editions for sending this amazing book to me! I found it so interesting looking at all the beautiful images & reading about the stories of the islanders who were displaced. I honestly had never heard of the Chagos Islands before reading this book so I learned a lot about how they were displaced when the British & Americans took over. The fact they barely received compensation and are banned from returning to their own homeland is just baffling to me. It makes me so angry and I hope the Chagos natives are able to return to their homeland in the near future. I’d highly recommend reading this, it was so informative & even just the pictures @gowitheflo19 illustrated are beautiful to look at but also bring the whole story to life! ‘One of this book’s greatest strengths is Grosset’s decision to depict the strife of the Chagossians through a graphic novel format. These islanders have faces and a tangible presence in your reading experience.’  A glorious review and pic of The Chagos Betrayal, @gowitheflo19 ’s debut, from @duvetreader , thanks again! To learn about how the US government sought to establish an overseas military presence during the Cold War, resulting in the forced exodus of the Chagos Islanders, there’s no better starting point than with this graphic novel. Find the rest, plus a sneak peek at some of Grosset’s incredible illustrations, over on Morgan’s profile.
