Last Tuesday (21/02/2022) I had the privilege to sit on a panel alongside @priyahein and critic Anthony Cummins at @Foyles , Charing Cross. @Priyahein is as delightful as her debut novel #Riambel. Through the story of the main character Noémie, Priya denounces an ongoing inequality between the poorest of the Mauritian society and the richest, namely a family of white Mauritians, descendants of the colonists, the oppressors. She delivers the harsh reality in a subtle way, yet so intense that one can sense the breeze from the sea on one's face and can feel one’s feet in the sand. As the story unfolds my heart starts to feel for Noémie and her mother... I become the character and suddenly, at the end of a chapter, food! A recipe, that she has cleverly inserted there. It makes my mouth water. I need to stop and find something to eat. Descriptions of delicious dishes punctuate the novel, and I swear that if there were more pages to read, I would have put on weight as I finished reading it. #Riambel is like those great sad songs that sting your heart, engrave your soul and leave a sweet melody at the back of your mind for a long time.
