We’re proud to share Ballroom in Focus — the largest digital archive documenting the history, legacy, and outsized influence of Ballroom culture.
What began as an initiative by Malika Saada Saar, YouTube’s Head of Human Rights, came to life thanks to volunteers across YouTube, Pixel, and Google Arts & Culture. Brand Studians contributed to the art direction, design, editing, and writing of the project.
"This collection is a love note to Ballroom, yes, but it's also a mother’s love note to her son and to other Black, Brown, queer, trans youth,” she says. “It shows them that they are loved and claimed, and shares the sacred culture, stories, and histories that belong to them.”

Introducing Ballroom In Focus from @googleartsculture . A first-of-its-kind digital archive on the cultural power and history of Ballroom.
Co-creation with the ballroom community was a key component of this project. That’s why the collection of nearly 1,500 never-before-seen artifacts were closely curated by members of the Ballroom community, including YouTube creator Ceasar Williams’ of the series Ballroom Throwbacks and @destinationtomorrow452 the LGBTQ+ center of the Bronx.
Brand Studio was proud to play a role in promotional videos and designing a visual identity for the experience, which included the typeface ‘Queering’ designed by @adamnac to support pro-LGBTQIA+ creative.

From ‘wordle hints’ to ‘how to create an nft,’ our Year in Search 2022 social campaign elevated some of the world’s top trending searches.
Integrating some of Google’s popular Search tools, including Hum to Search and Google Assistant, we created dynamic visuals nodding to the niche internet culture of the year.
👀 Think you can guess which city searched for ‘emo music’ the most in 2022? Or the only place in the country where ‘snake juice’ was a top trending recipe?
🔍 Local Year in Search is a geo-targeted digital experience providing a unique and often surprising glimpse into local trends from different regions across the U.S.
🤖 Since the project relied heavily on emojis for artistic expression, our team utilized Noto Emoji, an open source font developed by Google, to offer visual parity across a wide variety of devices and browsers.
