New music out now! Listen to “Whitney Portal” via link in bio.
I’ve been finishing a new album that started back before the bikepacking marathon from Alaska to Argentina. Set against that cascading backdrop of dirt roads and isolated villages across the Americas, it has eventually blossomed into a hopeful meditation on the peripatetic search for familial belonging. Where is home without the people we love? And how do we let go of the past lives we can no longer carry?
Several sets of speakers blew out in the process, but I came to prefer their distorted texture. Warped bass drums rattling in the face of jazz chords and West African highlife. Mastered by @goldenmastering in Ventura, California (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Thee Sacred Souls, Sonic Youth) and available wherever you enjoy listening.
“El amor que llevo para ti es como un espejo / Cuando rompe, en realidad solo se multiplica / My love for you is like a mirror / When it breaks, it really only multiplies”
Please take a moment to add it to your playlists or share with a friend, and let me know how you like the sounds. Thank you for being here with me.
Written and produced by Donivan Berube.
Recorded at home in Arizona and California.
Mastered by JJ Golden in Ventura, California.
Vocal harmonies by @saramaltinsky + @spilt_love .

Brain Freeze has been submitted for your #grammy consideration. Featuring the incredible band of @liamdavismusic@geralddowd247365@the_stickler and #michaelmahler . This time around, I found myself writing songs about treasure hunts, getting mad (Fire-Breathing Dragon), and getting lost in your own imagination (Party in My Head). As well as very personal songs about being a dad (Long Walk Home) and having a Dad (Everything From Here). Hope you’ll check out my anthem to Saturdays (Better Day than Saturday), the joys and dangers of ice cream consumption (Brain Freeze), and the first song I’ve ever written where I started with the title (All I Wanna do is Rock (paper, scissors)). Recorded and mixed at @vsopstudios by @hennythingispossible1978 and mastered by JJ golden at @goldenmastering Artwork by the incredible @daykampcreative
2 years and 3 days ago I was saying goodbye to my Grannie, today I dedicate this album to her.
Grandma Cora, you are the reason Mississippi is home. The reason we speak to strangers driving by on a two lane road. The reason I grew up singing in a small, CME church choir, in Eudora, MS. Thank you for making this land, this state, with its bloody & painful history, home. It should’ve been bitter, but you gave us family, and made it sweet.
My first album, Miss Black America (Mississippi Black America) comes out next Friday, August 29th! Pre-Save link in my bio! I’d love it if all my cousins clicked that link!

You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy.
