Announcing “Descending into Motion”
This program explores indigenous thought and cosmovisions through innovative short film animations.
Part of Cinefilmu’s annual program Midwest Movements where we invite midwest curators and organizations, this year invites Génesis Mancheren Ab'äj, currently rooted in Detroit and a member of Tierra Narrative, a film and literary production house dedicated to counternarratives emerging from the Central American isthmus and its diaspora.
This program was originally meant to premiere at the Queens Museum in New York City. Due to the museum's complicity with the genocide in Palestine, Génesis and Tierra Narrative, in collaboration with the filmmakers, pulled the program.
In solidarity with Palestine and all indigenous people, we will screen it at Cinefilmu on November 22nd.

Still processing all the new changes one year can bring but grateful for all the lessons and growth, & for all the shapes and sizes of community in New York, in Chicago, in Guatemala, and especially here in Detroit, that have shown me such warmth and kindness that made 2024 feel like a warm and exciting beginning 🥰✨😘
keeping it classy & demure in the highlands 🙂↔️🫰🏽✨
I’m wearing my family’s hometown attire, that of B’oko’ or Chimaltenango. Each Indigenous town/community having their own patterns and ways of weaving their own history, stories and cosmovision, and weaving it into our everyday.
Gyah! Excited and overwhelmed but more so excited to share a new project created and produced by @tierranarrative and edited by me. If u like contemplative, slow, collaborative and weird video projects, I hope u like this one ❤️🔥 it’s premiering this Saturday 10/19 at the @asap_artsnow ✨ huge thank u to everyone who contributed their thoughts and voices for this piece ✨ love yall!
Nothing compares to nyc but I think that’s a good thing, bc nothing can compare to the warmth and love I felt during my time in Chicago. It really has been a rejuvenating time here, especially having gone through really tough years. Chicago was really the light and hope I needed to restore my faith in what’s possible in my life, especially as an artist, writer, actor, dancer... Appreciate everyone I met, def is not goodbye—I’ll b back soon! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 Matyox wach’alal/ thank you fam!
& thank you to le boo @la.chillona and bestie @frisly for holding it down in Detroit and taking care of my son, mishi 🐱 love uuu!
Not trying to be too sappy but…im just honored to have been able to produce and work with such kind, talented weirdos that made this film possible. @ishkwaazhe ur vision was so clear and refreshing from the jump and your trust in your actors is just *chefs kiss*. Cant wait to work with you in that capacity! To the cast, @benairen & @kimsavarino , your humor and dedication to your roles is so special to witness, from the casting process to seeing you bring this film to life. To the crew—take care of your crew, bc they’ll take care of you! Appreciate and admire all of you for ur talent, dedication and ur 3am energies lmao honestly tho, I know it wasn’t easy!
& to my fellow lovely producers… @savannahromero@frislysoberanis@franz_ayas@jessxsnow yall make me want to produce more (Indigenous) cinema, seriously🫡 I deeply, deeply appreciate working with yall, just say the word—and show me the budget & timeline lol.
If you’re at the Toronto International Film Festival, don’t miss The Beguiling’s world premiere, TODAY, in the Strange Cuts shorts program at 6:15pm❤️🔥

Holi! Happy to share that most of the funds have been distributed to key community members in Guatemala for forest fire relief both in Toto and Xela. Thank yall so much for your patience and support—I will share more info soon for transparency on how the funds are being used, just need a little more time since communities are still dealing with ongoing fires 🫶🏽 for now, here is a photo of me and my tia in one of Chimal’s cemeteries. Miss the fam & Chimal so much!!
