Whether it was the thunderous 6.2-litre NA V8 or the brutal 4.0-litre biturbo, those blurry V8s weren’t just engines — they were living, breathing creatures. Loud. Unapologetic. Dripping with soul. The last time I sat in an AMG coupe was in Bengaluru. But my real AMG love story began much earlier — sometime in the 2010s, on a rain-slick night in Delhi. Shotgun in a W204 C63, the city glowing under streetlamps blurred by water streaks on the windscreen. Shredded rear tires fought for grip on soaked tarmac, and the driver — calm as a monk — knew exactly how to dance with chaos. The car slid, twitched, and glided, the short wheelbase and that wild V8 working in perfect harmony. Terrifying? Absolutely. Magical? Even more so. That was the night I learned that balance and drama can share the same heartbeat. Fast-forward to now — AMG’s bringing coupes back. The new CLE 53 might have traded its V8 brawn for a straight-six, but it’s no less serious. 450 horses. Sharper tech. Tighter dynamics. And a design that’s nothing short of seductive. No, I didn’t clickbait you into reading this, but hear me out. The premium segment of SUVs in India is actually two very different ends of a spectrum. On one end, we have two incredibly good luxury SUVs with mind-blowing (almost sedan-like) driving dynamics and on the other, an almost bare-bones SUV that anyone can swear by. And as much as I love the reliability and the capability, it just feels like a lot of it is still a compromise that we’re okay living with. Yes, prices have risen, and inflation is real, but I strongly feel it’s more of a market revolution that was missing. The Majestor is sort of that bridge that was missing in that space. It’s got the capability, it’s got the luxury, yes — it’s got a set of flaws that cannot be ignored, and the sheer size of it might intimidate a few. But it’s nice to see something in the market that sits above the usual. Of course, it is no match for the name the Fortuner has created over the last 17 years, and it will never make up for the legacy the Fortuner has created — it still stands at the GOAT.
