I first saw
@carlcraignet in 1993 at a club in Adelaide. From memory, the late Paul Hodder was behind the booking, likely at The Zoo, a small, short-lived spot we haunted on Thursdays when
@claudeyoungjr was living in town, plying his trade.
Around then, Carl had just released "Sound on Sound" on Planet E under his 69 alias. There was only one copy in Adelaide at first, and HMC (aka
@latenitetuffguy ) played the title track relentlessly. This, like many of Carlâs records, primarily on
@planetedetroit , felt like the future, science fiction pressed to vinyl.
Innerzone Orchestra, Paperclip People, BFC, "Bug in the Bassbin", "Oscillator", "Chicken Noodle Soup", they were not obvious 4/4 âbangersâ (a term that still makes me wince). Though "Jam the Box" certainly was, pure noise and chaos. On the flip, though, was "Desire": pitch-bending strings, high and low, a deep groove over a breakbeat, something else entirely. Fittingly, Desire was the first drum-led moment he played last night. Hearing it loud still gives me goosebumps.
@jondixon_ , a brilliant musician in his own right, supported Carl on keys. It hardly seems fair he ends up a footnote.
And
@octaveone , I cannot not mention them. The last time I saw the brothers was at Tresor in Berlin, around 2015. The energy they bring is something else, and 35 years on says plenty. While "Black Water" (with Ann Saunderson) brought wider recognition, it was their stripped-back mid-90s output that kept their records in my box.
Thoroughly enjoyed the night, wrapped by midnight, and closed out with an epic version of "Knights of the Jaguar". The only downside was the sound, poor and well below what the show deserved. It has been over a decade since I was last at the venue for Nils Frahm. I cannot recall how it sounded then, but this wasn't good enough
@roundhouseldn .
