The Japanese Tattoo is out today! It was a real honor to delve into the rich history and culture behind traditional tattooing in Japan while making this book — my 6th (!) with @manami.tokyo . She is so knowledgeable about the topic, having been involved in tattoo journalism for over two decades. Includes amazing interviews with masters in the field and a breakdown of recurring themes and symbolism, plus truly incredible full-body photos. Designed by the incomparable @sebitmin , with production by the best, @lu_mierl 🇯🇵🌸📚
NYC Street Vendors is out worldwide today! It feels like a particularly great time to highlight and celebrate the work of all the amazing people — an estimated 95% of whom are immigrants to the U.S. — who run the city’s food trucks, coffee carts, market stalls, and more across all five boroughs. This was such a fun book to make with the best team, @joelholland_studio (illustrations), @bydaviddodge (text), @chickfriedstike (design) and @lu_mierl (production). It also features an Introduction by the very awesome @jaekicho , and we’ve got a nice quote on the back from @streetvendorproject (if you’re not familiar with their work, definitely check them out and support) 🌭☕️🌯🍎🥨🫔🫑🗽📚
🎃Happy Halloween!🎃 This year I’m Leigh Bowery! If you’re not familiar, he was the most fabulous artist/fashion designer/club kid ever, bringing looks to the London scene in the 1980s and early ‘90s until his untimely death at age 33 from an AIDS-related illness. After visiting the Tate Modern’s retrospective exhibition about him this summer (and seeing these glasses IRL), I just knew a tribute was in order. Also! I’ve got nails inspired by two of his designs, by @thefingerbuffet 👻❤️
Out now! It was an honor to work with iconic photographer @jamelshabazz on Prospect Park, which showcases 45 years of his photos taken there. The book was thoughtfully designed by the talented @rushjacksonstudio , and features beautiful essays by @noelletheard , @laylahb , and @richardegreen . Production wizardry by @lu_mierl . Please check out the book, and go spend some time in the park, which Jamel refers to as his ‘oasis in Brooklyn’ 🌳📸📚
VINYL NYC is out today! It was a blast getting to work with photographers @jamesandkarla again on this book, which highlights 33 1/3 of the city’s finest record emporiums across all 5 boroughs, from @a1recordshop (pictured here) to @vprecords , @bluesun_nyc , @blackstarvinylbk and many more. @nextlevelhatti ’s text perfectly accompanies the images, and @sebitmin ’s design, inspired by printed ephemera and price stickers, is *chef’s kiss* It also features profiles on prominent folks who collect from these shops, including @xplargepro , @eliescobarnyc , @kristine_barilli and more. Out worldwide next Tuesday Sept. 9th! I had a devilishly good time working with my favorite madman-genius @viktor_wynd on our third book together, Dark Fairy Tales, which features stories from around the world that he has collected on his extensive travels. @luciana_nedelea_artworks , who specializes in heavy metal-style art, has provided the most wickedly perfect illustrations to accompany the tales, and @benjaminwolbergs design drives it all home. This book also marks my first foray into *spredges* (sprayed edges), which I think turned out just fab — thanks to production manager extraordinaire @lu_mierl 👹🧚♀️📚
Queer Happened Here is out today! I’m deeply proud to have commissioned and edited this book, which looks at 100 years of landmark LGBTQ+ spaces in NYC and is authored by expert writer and researcher Marc Zinaman (@queer_happened_here — who is also the sweetest guy). As queer rights are under attack in the US right now, it feels so important to share information about and celebrate the types of places we’ve included — they are where, in my opinion, the best aspects of contemporary culture are created. The book was designed lovingly and thoughtfully by @johnphilipsage and @oldthingsnewplaces , and it features a fun, poignant Foreword by the iconic @peppermint247 .
