🖤 My heart is as full as the moon was on Wednesday night at @strongroom.venue 🌝 One word that kept coming up to describe it was ‘authentic’. I would also add ‘warm’ and ‘electric’. The energy in that room was contagious. Thank you to all who travelled from near and far to be there 🙏 Thank you to the Strongroom team, especially Georgy, Ella + Dan. One of the things that made me start Girls Twiddling Knobs was a frustration at the HE system, both in how it was being eroded by corporate interests, but also in how it was stuck underserving women and GNC people in music technology. Universities and HE institutions are filled with amazing educators and researchers. These spaces have shaped who I am, the work I’ve made and my ability to even create this space, Girls Twiddling Knobs. If you’re teaching and researching in HE, I hope GTK offers a hopeful experiment in how we might do things differently. I hope you know you have so much to offer the world outside of bums-on-seats education, inflated outcome promises, cynical course titles and an increasing number of students who are encouraged to value firsts over real learning due to the fees system. There are still so many amazing people working in innovative, trailblazing departments. I stand in solidarity with you ❤️‍🔥

One of the things we cover on this final episode of the podcast is actively choosing to either make your music your income, or not… because you’ll side step a lot of frustration just accepting the reality of that choice and embracing the opportunities either path might offer. But if you do choose to make music your full time income, don’t chase streams! It’s outdated, unfair and unethical and a real dedicated fanbase will always be more fulfilling and make better business sense. As I near the close of @girlstwiddlingknobs at the end of this month, I came across this video on YouTube documenting the launch of my first album, Cold Water Songs, by El Porter-McCullough 15 years ago 😱 And I hope our podcast listeners, alumni and amazing community can take this ethos into your music, as you move forward from here. “I performed, recorded, produced and mixed the album myself, which possibly wasn’t the most intelligent thing to do, but I wanted to do it… and I think that I pulled it off… I *think*”. Don’t hold back. Don’t wait for perfect. And PLEASE stop waiting for permission. A little sloppy is better than never at all. A few mistakes is better than regrets. Thanks 26 year old Isobel. You feel like a totally different me sometimes, but when I watch this back, I can see it’s that same “fuck it, I’ll give it a go” attitude that’s gotten me where I am today.
