One of the things that made me start Girls Twiddling Knobs was a frustration at the HE system, both in how it was being eroded by corporate interests, but also in how it was stuck underserving women and GNC people in music technology.
Universities and HE institutions are filled with amazing educators and researchers. These spaces have shaped who I am, the work Iāve made and my ability to even create this space, Girls Twiddling Knobs.
If youāre teaching and researching in HE, I hope GTK offers a hopeful experiment in how we might do things differently.
I hope you know you have so much to offer the world outside of bums-on-seats education, inflated outcome promises, cynical course titles and an increasing number of students who are encouraged to value firsts over real learning due to the fees system.
There are still so many amazing people working in innovative, trailblazing departments.
I stand in solidarity with you ā¤ļøāš„
One of the things we cover on this final episode of the podcast is actively choosing to either make your music your income, or not⦠because youāll side step a lot of frustration just accepting the reality of that choice and embracing the opportunities either path might offer.
But if you do choose to make music your full time income, donāt chase streams! Itās outdated, unfair and unethical and a real dedicated fanbase will always be more fulfilling and make better business sense.
For more of my parting words, listen to the final episodes of the podcast now at the link in our bio š²

Over the next few moths Iām going to be releasing an album - and Iāll be sharing all the BTS ups and downs.
Iām also *thinking* about offering some in-person, concept-driven residenciesā¦
And who knows what else ā¤ļøāš„
What you can bet on is that Iāll keep doing things that are bold, uncompromising and never the well-trodden path š
And resting before, during and after, of course š“
Hereās to the next chapter šŖ

As I near the close of @girlstwiddlingknobs at the end of this month, I came across this video on YouTube documenting the launch of my first album, Cold Water Songs, by El Porter-McCullough 15 years ago š±
And I hope our podcast listeners, alumni and amazing community can take this ethos into your music, as you move forward from here.
āI performed, recorded, produced and mixed the album myself, which possibly wasnāt the most intelligent thing to do, but I wanted to do it⦠and I think that I pulled it off⦠I *think*ā.
Donāt hold back. Donāt wait for perfect. And PLEASE stop waiting for permission.
A little sloppy is better than never at all.
A few mistakes is better than regrets.
Thanks 26 year old Isobel.
You feel like a totally different me sometimes, but when I watch this back, I can see itās that same āfuck it, Iāll give it a goā attitude thatās gotten me where I am today.
Thanks to El for making this video, and also @theblackboxbelfast who let me host the album launch this is filmed at in their lovely cafe, free of charge. Itās grass routes venues like you who help artists get a leg up š
Canāt believe Iām releasing my fifth album this year. Join my email list to tag along for the ride šļø ā¤ļøāš„ #linkinbio š @isobel_andersonnn
If youāve dropped the ball on your New Yearās resolutions⦠no wonder š«
This time of year is for the quiet work.
The preparation.
Rest.
Reflection.
Decluttering.
Itās OK if you need to sit or shed before you can take on fresh challenges and opportunities when Spring comes back around.
My January 2026 is about quietly clearing my to do list, sending off applications, sending my album to be mixed and playing boardgames with pints of Guinness.
Iām not trying to fix myself.
And Iām not expecting myself to āleap into actionā.
Honouring seasons means honouring your nervous system, and when we do that, we find sustainability instead of burn out.
The inner work wonāt get you social media likes, but it will lay the foundations for when youāre ready to shine in the sun again š
Take a nap, my friend š“
