My Tiny Love story is in the print edition of @nytimes today!
If you get the paper, it’s on page 3 in the Spotlights sections and according to my MIL, you can’t miss it because the photo is huge 😂😂.
We only have access to the International edition here in London so thanks to everyone who read this in their morning paper and texted to tell me and Phil!
The first email came in from an old colleague of Phil’s (from maybe 20 years ago) who read my story and recognized Phil’s photo. He said it helped him start his day with a smile on his face :)
Needless to say, I’ve enlisted anyone I know in the Tri State area to buy a copy of the paper today.
Thanks to NYT editor Miya Lee for publishing my story first in last week’s online edition and again today in print.
Thanks again to my friend and fellow memoirist @abbys480 for feedback, edits and encouragement!
Special thanks to my former roommate and still friend Rebecca for introducing me to Phil and, finally, thanks to Phil without whom there’d be no story.
XOXO @gilapfeffer

My debut in @newyorkermag is a collaboration with my friend @danajerimaier (not her debut, she’s published here a bunch !)
📚
The inspiration came while I was writing my memoir (NEARLY DEPARTED, coming July 9) and started paying closer attention to the blurbs on other books I was reading and then Dana and I spent many laughter-filled hours on Facetime imagining what a blurber might really be thinking. Here’s the result!
Thanks @emmaewallen and @craezy for publishing our piece this fine leap year day.
📕
Enjoy and sorry if we’ve made it impossible for you to ever take a book blurb at face value ever again :)
XOXO @gilapfeffer@danajerimaier

Thank you @storycirclenetwork for awarding The Gilda Prize to NEARLY DEPARTED. I’m proud to be the recipient of an award which, as you put it, “honors comedian Gilda Radner by recognizing memoirs which are distinguished by their fresh voices, their honesty, and their authenticity. They make us laugh (even when we want to cry).”
I’ve loved the late Radner’s iconic comedy style since first seeing her on @nbcsnl as a little kid. Her memoir, It’s Always Something, has pride of place on a shelf of inspirational memoirs on a shelf above my office desk. Although she died of ovarian cancer in 1989, her book- particularly her writing style- stuck with me all these years for the way she tackled painful, dark topics with just the right blend of humor and respect. I tried to write NEARLY DEPARTED in the same vein and hope I’ve achieved that.
Thanks to my excellent and supportive publisher @theexperiment and my editor @batya_edits and the many many people who helped make this memoir the best book it could be.
Remember to always find the humor in whatever challenges you’re facing. And if you’re unable to do that yourself, surround yourself with people who can 🩵

I remember being little and “surprising” my mom with breakfast in bed and if she was still with us today I’d say SORRY MOM
Happy Mothers day to those who celebrate and lots of love and understanding to those who don’t.

I wasn’t sure what prop to use for my May #feelitonthefirst post until I met Troy Sutton after this week’s HERhealthEQ menopause and BRCA event with @brcastrong .
Troy strode up to the stage holding what I was sure were two beige yarmulkas. Then I clocked pink shirt and pink ribbon pin and realized he was here for something breast cancer related and not to hand me gifts to take home to my husband and sons.
Troy launched into a Shark Tank worthy pitch about The Healing Pads, a wonderful product he and his mother developed in response to breast pain she was having, and how the pads were helping everyone from nursing moms to post surgical patients and more get relief from their own pain and discomfort.
The pads can be cooled or heated, are reusable and fit right in your bra. So simple and so impactful at the same time.
This isn’t an ad or even a collab post, it’s just me, your friendly FEEL IT lady, sharing something new I learned about a product that could come in really handy for you or someone you care about. It’s also the perfect prop to remind you to prioritize your breast health- do a self exam, keep up with your screenings and know your risk!
You can learn more about the Healing Pads at @thehealingbras .
As always, make sure to get your breast cancer related info from reliable sources which I’ll share here :

special thanks to @btdicker for coming to the panel and taking these photos on her way-better-than-mine camera
I wish you a Shabbat Shalom, good health and the empowerment that comes with knowing about your medical and genetic profile.

One week ago tonight I had the honor of sharing my story of breast cancer previvor and survivorship with a warm, welcoming crowd in Chicago.
🥃
The event: The official launch of the hereditary cancer genetic testing program by @jewishgenetics
🧬
The hosts: @evekleinerman , @sour.patch.syds and the amazing team at Sarnoff Center for Jewish Genetics
🌅
The Venue: A sun drenched, airy space in downtown Chicago called @kovaldistillery whose Old Fashioneds are A+ (I waited till after my speech to indulge)
The night would not have been possible without my friend @sarahleibov connecting me with the Sarnoff Team and I loved meeting her family and friends that night too.
It was an especially proud moment for me to be addressing a crowd beside a table stacked with copies of my memoir with my friend, teacher and book advisor @leighstein sitting in the front row.
my favorite part of these types of events is meeting people afterward and hearing their stories of how breast cancer has impacted- or in many cases is currently impacting- their lives. Also the Old Fashioneds. I really love those.
Thanks so much for having me, Sarnoff, and shout out to Chicago itself, which really knows how to deliver a memorable view. I hope to be back very soon!
XOXO @gilapfeffer

What do these motorcycle helmets have to do with Passover or April? Absolutely nothing. But my friend Ifat of @lilithefirst_boutique took set up this shot when I visited her fab boutique in NYC and I knew I had my April #feelitonthefirst post :)
Actually, helmets are an excellent symbol of prevention, albeit of a different kind, so on this Passover eve and in the run up to Easter - and anything else that brings you and your loved ones together- please remember to prioritize your breast health.
- do a monthly self exam
- know your risk profile
- keep your with your screenings
- advocate for yourself if something doesn’t feel right- you know your body better than anyone else !
Wishing you all good health, a great holiday and an algorithm that sends you content to regulate your nervous system.
ALSO: I’ll be in Chicago on the evening of April 16 speaking at a @jewishgenetics event… if you’re local, DM me for registration details!
I’ll be on a women’s health panel with @brcastrong and some medical experts in the menopause space on April 28 in NYC, DM me for registration details!

Everywhere we look, women in midlife are extolling the benefits of taking HRT. But for women with certain medical histories such as breast cancer, blood clots, or stroke risk, systemic hormone therapy is often considered unsafe or, at the very least, complicated.
In an age when HRT is marketed as the end-all be-all, that exclusion can feel like being locked out of a club you didn’t even want to go to, but suddenly very much do.
