Many of the side effects of breast cancer treatment can be improved, or even resolved, with Breast Cancer Rehabilitation — a specialized subspeciality of physical and occupational therapy. Despite strong evidence and national standards supporting these modalities as a core component of breast cancer care, it remains dramatically underused. Fewer than 10% of survivors are referred to breast cancer rehabilitation and only 2-9% receive this specialized care! This must change! I was fortunate to have had time before my double mastectomy and DIEP FLAP reconstruction to join Facebook groups and instagram accounts that spoke about the importance of prehab and rehab when it came to these surgeries and I was able to be proactive in getting prescriptions for therapy even before I underwent my initial mastectomy. I had traveled about 1.5 hours for my surgery, so seeing the specialized therapists that my plastic surgery group recommended was not feasible. Eventually, I did find an OT who specialized in breast cancer care and lymphedema therapy near me @scenj_70 , but then realized that my insurance plan did not cover OT care at all. I had done all this careful planning- how could this be - I have had to pay out-of pocket and use our HSA account because I knew how important this was to my recovery. I am so thankful that I was able to use a specialized therapist and rebuild my strength and full range of motion! But this should be the norm not the exception and should be part of our insurance coverage! @wellbeyondbreastcancer
It’s MY 5 YEAR Anniversary of meeting with Dr Diane Simeone ( and @Dr.Paul Oberstein Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone today to discuss the strange findings of a test prior to what was supppose to be my double mastectomy and DIEP Flap reconstruction -In about a 3 week period I was diagnosed with a second cancer - Stage 2b Pancreatic cancer—and started on a rigorous chemotherapy regime- I benefited from years of research and clinical trials that had come before me and I am here today and every day that I can to ask for $ for Research—this disease to takes too many of our loved ones. As many of you know I am about 5 years out from being diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Five years is a huge milestone in the fight against pancreatic cancer!!! PanCan was an important part of helping me throughout my treatment. My team and I are taking steps to end pancreatic cancer at PanCAN PurpleStride on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
We want to make the biggest impact on the lives of pancreatic cancer patients – and we need your help to do that!
PanCAN PurpleStride is the number one way PanCAN raises money to fund vital research that can bring new treatment options to patients, and gives them free, personalized one-to-one support through PanCAN Patient Services.
Here’s where you come in! We’ve set an ambitious fundraising goal – because the more money we raise, the bigger impact we make – and would appreciate a gift of any size to help us get there.
Can we count on you to get us one step closer to the day where pancreatic cancer patients don’t just survive but thrive?
Patients and families need us now more than ever!
Thank you for your support!
March is Lymphedema Awareness Month and We at Well Beyond Breast Cancer are highlighting the importance of increased awareness, education and support for those living with this chronic condition and steps that can be taken to proactively help prevent and reduce symptoms.

We’re BEYOND thrilled to introduce our Patient Advocates! 💜🎉
These incredible breast cancer survivors are using their lived experience to spark change and strengthen survivorship for others.
Together, they’re working to make Breast Cancer Rehabilitation and Lymphedema Therapy a standard part of cancer care, so more people can live well beyond breast cancer, not just get through it.
Because no one should have to struggle in silence, feel dismissed, or fight for essential care.
Through storytelling and community outreach, our advocates are raising awareness about Breast Cancer Rehabilitation and Lymphedema Therapy, minimizing stigma and misinformation, and helping others speak up for the care and resources they need and deserve.
We’re deeply grateful for their voices and honored to help amplify their stories.
💜 Please join us in welcoming this incredible group!

With a family history of cancer, Betty underwent genetic testing in 2010 and learned she had a BRCA2 mutation. In 2011, she had her first risk-reducing surgery when she had her ovaries removed to reduce her risk of ovarian cancer.
Although she knew she still needed risk-reducing surgery to deal with her increased risk of breast cancer, Betty was diagnosed with DCIS in March 2021 before scheduling surgery. That 11-year delay likely saved her life!
Betty’s sister had died of cancer just 3 months before her own diagnosis, so she knew the importance of proceeding immediately with the long-planned double mastectomy. Because she opted for DIEP flap reconstruction at the time of her DMX, an MRI was ordered just 1 month after her DCIS diagnosis.
Had Betty opted for implants rather than the DIEP flap reconstruction, an MRI would not have been ordered. An incidental finding on her pancreas during that MRI led to additional testing and a pancreatic cancer diagnosis in April 2021.
Betty benefited from already knowing her BRCA2 status, because it allowed the oncologist to quickly start her on a chemotherapy known to work well with her mutation. Her oncologist also ordered updated panel testing to ensure there were no other previously unidentified gene variants that might affect her care plan, and there were not.
Just 4 months after her pancreatic cancer diagnosis, in August 2021, Betty underwent a partial pancreatectomy/splenectomy. She has been NED since December 2021, other than an early melanoma found and removed during a routine dermatology check in January 2024.
Grateful for life, Betty uses her voice for early detection and prevention in any way she can, and we appreciate her sharing her powerful and impactful story with us!
Do you have a personal or family history of cancer? Be like Betty. Know your risk!
