I am so honored to teach Beginning Indonesian courses at University of Pennsylvania and received Penn Prize of Excellence in Teaching by Graduate Students! My student nominated me in secret, so the announcement from @cetli_penn selection committee came as a pleasant surprise. The award reception was on 21 April at @upenn.gradcenter - magically coinciding with Indonesian’s Kartini Day, a national day to commemorate R.A Kartini, a figure who fought for women’s rights and education :) I am grateful for @atadianpermata and @agneschristie who recommended and helped me to teach this course at Penn Language Center, and to Prof. Nazlı Bhatia who supports and wrote for me to the selection committee, thank you for believing in me ❤️ I want to thank @penncasila.grad @ledianggara @chevptr @nabilasftri @liyarmina @isyalarasati @mianulisakti @andreastevenkartantya for helping the class activities by talking Bahasa Indonesia with students and borrowed me some Rupiah cash for the class exercise and to @yolmita for her legacy ❤️ To Emily Moore from @pennmuseum who helped us access Indonesian artefacts that never been seen for decades in the storage until the class came. From Indonesia, I got the help from ‘collective intelligence’ of experts: @dfordiah @albertrahmanp @tridents_ @susantadwitanaya @_christopherojuu @iam_murda to write the description of those rare Indonesian objects as most of them are not accessible in English or even the internet. I am also grateful for @kintansilvany @sintastorms @gapuraphilly #alfitridede #yulia from Djakarta Cafe-Martabak OK-Good Hatch @w4tty from @urbansushiphilly and the food truck auntie at Penn who makes us feel a sense of Indonesian community here in Philly. And friends @thatbomabrown @salonipmaheshwari @_aliqua__ @nisha.waghmare.6 @takeme__leaveme @jajwalyark for your support ❤️ And, to my wonderful, brilliant and beloved students @hyderhasnohimmat @_nicoledon @3mma_imn1 Naomi, Cherilynn and Zachary! It takes special story and big heart for someone who wants to take a language class to connect with people who are dear to them. You guys make teaching feel so fun, sacred, meaningful and energizing 🥹 Aku sangat bersyukur bertemu kalian!

Next Sunday, March 8th, from 2:30pm–8pm, join @further.reading.press (Bandung, Indonesia) for a zine-making workshop and community dinner at Ulises, co-organized with @gesyada and in collaboration with @gapuraphilly . This program activates @serv.ingsuggestion , one of Further Reading’s publication series, featured in Ulises: Reassembly—a magazine that reads culture through food, serving up stories and perspectives on how we connect with what we consume. Part 1 (2.30–4.30pm): A zine-making workshop with Pemuda Gapura to map stories from our favorite Indonesian food spots in Philly and archive “auntie-approved” recipes adapted with local ingredients. Part 2 (6–8pm): A conversation over food and break-fasting (iftar) in the style of liwetan—an Indonesian-style communal feast of rice and shared sides served on long banana leaves. The dinner is opened by a cultural performance by @moderocompany . The meal is prepared and assembled by @pecelndeso.usa and co-hosted by Philadelphia Cultural Treasures Fellow @sintastorms , sharing stories about Indonesian food culture in Philly. **Capacity is limited. Please only RSVP if you are committed to attending. Links for both programs in our bio. Images courtesy of Further Reading and Gapura Philly

The Gojek driver sent me these pictures of how he distributed the food for his fellow drivers at Jakarta 🥹 It was night time for me in Philadelphia/US but it was breakfast time for the strong and courageous drivers at Jakarta where the protest for justice to the gov’t still happening☀️ This was the 3rd batches since last 30 Aug where I coordinated GoFood donation from Philly for ride-hailing drivers relief efforts since Alm. Affan Kurniawan death by the police. I want to thank @michaelmaranda @gyndeee @even__mercy @naticonrazon for the support and donate from different parts of the world 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇯🇵 Sorry for the clunky Google Translate wordings from my chat with the drivers, but I hope you can sense how meaningful it was for them. For fellow int’l students and friends, feel free to reach to me if you’d like to take part in helping these drivers to stay afloat during Indonesia struggle right now! #wargajagawarga #indonesia

DM me if you’d like to contribute in helping these drivers. What we (Indonesians) are protesting: unfair economic policy, misuse of power and privilege, politicians’ arrogance, and corrupted system from the government. When authorities could not longer protect us, we shall help each other #wargabantuwarga #wargajagawarga
