#FRKiosk—Following a pause between 2024–25, we felt it was time to reintroduce our KIOSK to all of you. As a pop-up bookshop concept, KIOSK by Further Reading gathers a selective assortment of printed matter and other interesting curiosities in a temporary physical setting—one place at a time. It is dedicated to the dissemination and appreciation of small, independent publishing activities. The idea began when, as an independent publisher, we found it challenging to identify an ideal bookshop to carry our titles. We started publishing in 2019, at a time when bookshops were closing and independent publications were not as widely appreciated as they are today. A year later, the pandemic further worsened the situation. Over time, through participating in numerous art book fairs and festivals, we gradually came to understand how art and independent publications circulate and are distributed. Since 2022, we have been buying wholesale and bringing back titles from fellow independent publishers that resonate with our practice. Based on this curation, we present them collectively through KIOSK at selected shops and spaces, occasionally alongside collaborative merchandise related to the publications. To date, we have introduced independent publishing to places where it might not typically “belong”: a book club inside an actual club, Zodiac; a sensory book showcase and pop-up during the pandemic inside the gift shop Grammars; a newsstand within the vintage and consignment store Footurama; and several “shop within a shop” iterations at Toko Hands by Black Hand Gang, Ruang Dini, and Morgy Coffee. KIOSK is also a term we use to identify a shop within our practice, extending to our online presence on marketplaces such as Tokopedia. This year, in anticipation of our new website and an expanded catalogue, we plan to host another off-site KIOSK, as well as open our studio by appointment. Stay tuned, and feel free to get in touch if you are interested—or know of a suitable space. 📚👀

Thank you to @gapuraphilly and @gesyada for collaborating on the activation of @serv.ingsuggestion (Bandung, Indonesia), a @further.reading.press magazines that reads culture through food, featured in Ulises: Reassembly. Together, we sat down for break-fasting (iftar) in the style of liwetan–an indonesian-style communal feast after making a series of zines with Permuda Gapura to map stories and recipes from our favorite Indonesian food spots in Philly. The night was full of conversation about culture, family, migration and adaptation, serving as an extension of the questions of care and labor that led Reassembly. The meal opened with a cultural performance by @moderocompany . The meal was prepared and assembled by @pecelndeso.usa and co-hosted by Philadelphia Cultural Treasures Fellow @sintastorms , sharing stories about Indonesian food culture in Philly. Thank you for joining us! Stay tuned for the off-site launch of the Philly edition of Serving Suggestion, coming soon! Pictures courtesy: Ricky Yanas

It’s been over a year since the release of Further Reading Print No.4, titled ‘Learning Within, Learning Without: Modes of Design Enquiry’. We are grateful for the warm enthusiasm and support we have received from our readers. After the first edition travelled to countless book fairs, discussions, and launch events, we are excited to share that the second edition is now in production. 📓 In this issue, we bring together creative practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds to reflect on learning, from structured pedagogical approaches to more personal and community-centred experiences, as well as industry-led forms of learning. While it began as a discourse on design education, the book has evolved to explore learning from a more all-encompassing perspective. At its core, #FRPrint4 is a book about creative learning. It celebrates multiplicity and interdisciplinary practices that extend beyond the field of design, opening up broader conversations about how knowledge is formed and shared within the creative sphere. With the second edition on the way, we look forward to bringing these voices and perspectives back into circulation. Stay tuned for updates on the reprint! — Further Reading Print No.4 is distributed internationally via Idea Books (@ideabooksnl ) for the rest of the world; Art Data (@artdata_london ) for the UK; Slow Burn Books (@slowburn_books ) for Australia and New Zealand; or directly from us for Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia—as well as through our official #FRStockists. — Images courtesy of Further Reading and Trim & Fold

Further Reading featured in The Jakarta Post! 🇮🇩 Back in 2022, we shared a bit of the story behind Further Reading with The Jakarta Post’s Anindito Ariwandono—from our early online days in 2017 to taking print into our own hands with risograph, and showing up at art book fairs around the world since 2019. What started as a simple design-related reading reference project on this platform has since grown into who we are today: a multi-format publishing initiative with a strong independent mindset, rooted in print and community. Grateful to everyone who has read, shared, believed in, and supported what we do along the way. 🔗 Link in bio to read the full feature.

Next Sunday, March 8th, from 2:30pm–8pm, join @further.reading.press (Bandung, Indonesia) for a zine-making workshop and community dinner at Ulises, co-organized with @gesyada and in collaboration with @gapuraphilly . This program activates @serv.ingsuggestion , one of Further Reading’s publication series, featured in Ulises: Reassembly—a magazine that reads culture through food, serving up stories and perspectives on how we connect with what we consume. Part 1 (2.30–4.30pm): A zine-making workshop with Pemuda Gapura to map stories from our favorite Indonesian food spots in Philly and archive “auntie-approved” recipes adapted with local ingredients. Part 2 (6–8pm): A conversation over food and break-fasting (iftar) in the style of liwetan—an Indonesian-style communal feast of rice and shared sides served on long banana leaves. The dinner is opened by a cultural performance by @moderocompany . The meal is prepared and assembled by @pecelndeso.usa and co-hosted by Philadelphia Cultural Treasures Fellow @sintastorms , sharing stories about Indonesian food culture in Philly. **Capacity is limited. Please only RSVP if you are committed to attending. Links for both programs in our bio. Images courtesy of Further Reading and Gapura Philly

Part 1 of our long-overdue 2025 recap, before February ends. ✌️😌 Last year turned out to be a busy one for us. We counted over 40 programmes and events, alongside our regular art book fair participations. Here are a few highlights—images are chronological; the text is not. 📚 Our editor–publisher Januar served as a jury member for #LAABF2025 (shared in an earlier post) and Keuken Sunday Funday 2025. We were also invited as the inaugural host exhibitor of TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR, where we shared a table with Betweenia Project, and brought our regular #FRRisoRoom travelling exhibition to Jakarta and Bali. 🥷 We launched and presented our first co-publishing, translation, and adaptation project with Edition Taube—Cari Cara Curi Buku/How to Shoplift Books by David Horvitz—alongside Ibrahim Soetomo, hosted by Zarani Risjad. 💬 Along the way, #FRKiosk popped up at Blue Doors Melbourne, and Reading at RAD programme in Bali, followed by talks and discussions at National Gallery of Victoria, Ubud Open Studios, Ruang Arta Derau, Bunga Zine Fest, and Tos! Yogyakarta, alongside Scott, Nikki, Thy, Zeny, Agugn, Puti, Gilang, Wicitra, Juli, Andra, Ika, Trotter Tales, Zine Zan Zun, Nia, and Pras. 👨🏻‍🎨 We also supported our long-time collaborator, artist Krishnamurti Suparka on his solo exhibition Menempa Udara di Jeda Lembaga—developing the exhibition identity (with Each Other Company), sharing our Riso facility to produce parts of his artworks, and printing the exhibition newsprint—plus a few lovely studio visits to Dennis and Zenobia’s, and Glom Press in the Melbourne suburbs. More recap in Part 2. — Grateful for the opportunities and generous collaborations. We are excited for the projects, programmes, and partnerships ahead this year—and to open our Bandung studio and KIOSK by appointment during regular studio hours. — Images courtesy of Further Reading, Studio 22nya, Keuken, Ubud Open Studios, RAD, Bunga Zine Fest, and Tos!
