Another excerpt from the Peni Candra Rini with Shahzad Ismaily & Andy McGraw performance at the Asia Society in NYC a couple of years ago, Do not miss their Philly debut this Sunday, April 26th 7:30pm at The Perch located at 2008 E. Arizona Street (2 1/2 blocks from the York/Dauphin MFL/L1 station). Renowned Indonesian composer and performer Peni Candra Rini—described by David Harrington of Kronos Quartet as “one of the world’s greatest singers”— makes her Philly debut at The Perch. Rini is a master of several traditional forms and is regarded as one of Indonesia’s most daring young composers, one of only a handful of female composers in Indonesia. In Rini's words, her work "mixes a wide range of materials, including traditional Javanese gamelan singing, Balinese chant, stringband music of the 1960s, and intercultural improvisations, bringing them all together through my contemporary compositional approach". She will be supported by Shahzad Ismaily & Andy McGraw, accompanied by a screening of Setan Jawa (2017 Garin Nugroho), a silent movie that evokes Javanese mythology through the genre of contemporary horror as inspired by the perennial silent film classic, Nosferatu by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. Tickets and info link in bio. Join us before the concert from 5:30-7:30pm in the front room for WarKop. Presented by Gapura, get cozy with intimate performances and Indonesian snacks courtesy of the talented Pemuda (youth group). See you there!

Setan Jawa - Garin Nugroho, (Indonesia, 2017) Silent film with live score created by Peni Candra Rini accompanied by Shahzad Ismaily & Andy McGraw this Sunday, April 26th 7:30pm at The Perch located at 2008 E. Arizona Street (2 1/2 blocks from the York/Dauphin MFL/L1 station). Nugroho’s Setan Jawa evokes Javanese mythology through the genre of contemporary horror as inspired by the perennial silent film classic, Nosferatu by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. The film explores Indonesia’s pre-orthodox Islamic stories of the seven deals man makes with the devil in order to gain wealth and the live score dramatically underpins the mysticism and sensuality of Nugroho’s tale of love and sacrifice. Tickets and info at the link in bio. Join us from 5:30-7:30pm in the front room of The Perch for WarKop. Presented by Gapura, get cozy with intimate performances and Indonesian snacks courtesy of the talented Pemuda youth group. If you have any other Sunday plans cancel them now - this is it! Performing on Sunday April 26th 7:30PM at The Perch located at 2008 E. Arizona St (2 1/2 blocks from the York/Dauphin MFL/L1 stop) we are proud to present Peni Candra Rini accompanied by Shahzad Ismaily & Andy McGraw! Peni Candra Rini is a renowned Javanese singer, educator, and composer fusing Javanese sufi poetry with contemporary composition for Indonesian and Western instruments. The Kronos Quartet has described her as “one of the world’s greatest singers.” She is a master of several traditional forms (primarily gamelan) and is regarded as one of Indonesia’s most daring young composers, one of only a handful of female composers in the country. Shahzad Ismaily is a Brooklyn-based musician, composer, engineer and founder of Figure 8 Recording. Born to Pakistani immigrant parents, he grew up in a wholly bicultural household. Exploring improvisation, tonal shifts and rhythmic movement, the Grammy nominated artist (Love In Exile, Best Alternative Jazz Album) often referred to as the “Musician’s favorite Musician” has worked with a number of avant-garde musicians and composers. Andy McGraw is Professor and Chair of Music at the University of Richmond in Virginia. He is the author of Radical Traditions: Reimagining Culture in Balinese Experimental Music (Oxford 2013) and Music as Ethics (Oxford 2023). This performance will be accompanied with a screening of Setan Jawa (2017 Garin Nugroho). Tickets and info at the link in bio. Before the performance join us from 5:30-7:30pm in the front room for WarKop. Presented by Gapura, get cozy with intimate performances and Indonesian snacks courtesy of the talented Pemuda (youth group). See you there!
