In 1986, General Idea established a studio in New York, in addition to our loft in Toronto. It was the lower floor in an old brownstone on West 12th Street, the kind that is at ground level in the back, in this case with a beautiful garden of paving stones, ivy, lilacs and a birdbath. But in the front, where the ground is half a floor higher, one looks out at the ankles of passers-by. We were next door to St. Vincents Hospital, which soon became New York's prime care facility for HIV. Here I am, so pleased with my fresh Vidal Sassoon haircut, so excited to be in the midst of downtown Manhattan. What an adventure! --- AA Bronson @aa_bronson #newyorkcity #stvincentshospital #generalidea #aabronson

🇮🇹🇨🇦 “Jorge Zontal (January 27, 1944 – February 3, 1994) was born in a concentration camp. Here he is as he appeared at his 50th birthday party in Toronto in 1994, surrounded by friends who came from near and far. It was, I realize now, a kind of performance art. He is in his wheelchair, and he is blind. Once most guests had arrived, he withdrew to his bedroom, where he received friends one by one, or as couples. I would love to know his final words to each one. He died a week later, of AIDS-related causes. I miss him, not every day, but almost every day. @louwrienwijers once said that @Generalidea_ was like a sailboat: I was the sail and Felix the rudder, but Jorge was the keel. If he were here today, he would be turning 82.” 📖 📖 by AA Bronson @aa_bronson 🖼️ @barrgilmore #whatisrememberedlives

@a_n__n___a____ was startled to discover the General Idea AIDS Wallpaper installation (1990) on view at the @stedelijkmuseum in Amsterdam yesterday, and sent us these images. We didn't know about it either but we are thrilled to see the work up again, and in plenty of time for International AIDS Day on Decemver 1... although every day is International AIDS Day for us.

AIDS (Lascaux Green Light with Border), 1988. Oil on canvas. We made this painting specifically to be donated to the @newmuseum for a fundraiser. Consequently it falls outside of the colour sequence of the original series and is slightly larger, and with an added border (the original series is held in a private collection). This variant ended up in a private collection in Vancouver and is now available through @estherschippergallery . It is a good one!

THE TENDER PART OF LIFE DEPENDS ON IT by Sven Gex with a text by Eleonora Bitterli ... new acquisition for our library, thank you both. We have been ruminating recently on the process by which our book collection has taken the form it has. The majority of the books that call out to us are rooted in imagery. The text plays a role but not the primary role; and although in this case the text pretends to be about the book, it is in fact simultaneously integral to the book. The majority of our books have been held in the library of the @natgallerycan for some years and this will join them soon.

FELIX, JUNE 5, 1994 Today is the 31st anniversary of FelIx's death of AIDS in Toronto, June 5, 1994. One of the three artists of General Idea, together with AA and Jorge, 1969-1994. I have told the story many times in many ways. In his last days Felix surrounded himself on his deathbed with colour and pattern, we could say with life itself. I think of this image as his final work, a collaboration of course but very much under his control, a final self portrait. @aa_bronson #aids #hiv #generalidea #felixpartz @theaidsmemorial Collection: @natgallerycan

On View: General Idea - Ziggurat 📍Through March 29 It was Felix Partz who first introduced the Ziggurat motif in a series of paintings from 1968–69, predating the formal establishment of General Idea as a collective. After returning from a trip to North Africa, he brought with him the Ziggurat, a pattern that seemed to have taken root in his mind—whether influenced by the tiered structures of Mesopotamia and Egypt or the intricate designs of tribal carpets remains uncertain. In 1986, the group revisited the Ziggurat motif, completing unfinished sketches from Partz’s earlier series. — Detail of General Idea, 1968 Shaped Ziggurat Painting #1, 1986 Exhibition Views, General Idea - Ziggurat at Mai 36 Galerie, 2025. Fear Management (1987), a portfolio of eight screenprints by @generalidea_ 📍On View in our current exhibition “Ziggurat” through March 29. The series features emblematic designs resembling coats of arms, each incorporating symbolic imagery that reflects the group’s satirical examination of societal fears and the influence of media. During the 1980s, General Idea often explored the effects of media and advertising on fear and control, particularly in the context of the AIDS crisis, political propaganda, and consumer culture. Fear Management likely plays on these themes, using irony and appropriation to critique how fear is manufactured and exploited within society. — Exhibition Views, General Idea - Ziggurat at Mai 36 Galerie, 2025. On View: General Idea - Ziggurat 📍Through March 29. General Idea’s Ziggurat paintings (1968 and 1986) are assembled so that four materials—oil paint, decorator house paint, fluorescent acrylic paint, and raw canvas, each a different color—never touch one another. The ziggurat series, conceived in the late sixties, appropriates the methods of New York Color Field Painting, especially Frank Stella. The original drawings of 1968 use the ziggurat form to generate rectangles of different proportions and then allow them to escape the rectangle to generate technically more demanding shaped forms. @generalidea_ — General Idea 1968 Shaped Ziggurat Painting #5, 1986 signed & dated verso Acrylic, fluorescent acrylic, and enamel on unprimed canvas 239.9 x 160 x 10.2 cm General Idea 1968 Shaped Ziggurat Painting #1, 1986 signed & dated verso fluorescent acrylic, acrylic and latex on unprimed canvas 158.8 x 240 cm Exhibition Views, General Idea - Ziggurat at Mai 36 Galerie, 2025.
