Speaking of Father's Day, here is my photograph of @mjkvdl with our daughter, Anna Noel, born prematurely and hence this rather intense colour! She is ten days old in this photo. Tomorrow she arrives in Berlin to visit us, at the age of 21! Can't wait!!! Installation view: lacquer on vinyl, 7 x 10 feet.

Today was the day I deserved a treat. Hence this matt black horsehide cap from @butcherei_lindinger here in Berlin. I first encountered leather, in the gay sense, in my visits to Amsterdam in the seventies. @rob.leather.official opened his first store there and I discovered it almost immediately, and made friends with him as a young twink. I insisted on trying everything on, even the cockrings, and he called me a "naughty boy". I can't remember the first thing I bought there. Perhaps it was trousers, or more likely a jockstrap: everything was made to measure. He also had an amazing gallery space, where I first saw all the names we know today, starting with @tomoffinlandfoundation . During the @generalidea_ residency at @de_appel in late 1979, I went to the same leather bar seven nights a week. I was unstoppable. Our video TEST TUBE was refused by the arts channel for which it had been commissioned. But we showed it at the @canadianpavilion at the @venice.art.biennale instead a few months later. Congratulations to @abbasakhavan and the @natgallerycan for this year's Pavilion, by the way, 46 years later! #leatherdaddy

The last week has been entirely about hats. Today's hat, courtesy of @mjkvdl . Could this be my birthday hat (not to be confused with my birthday suit)? I hear that "fancy" clothes are to be avoided this season. But surely this does not fall into that category. It is difficult to know how to "dress for success" when one is in one's eightieth year. #dressforsuccess #birthdaysuit #hat

Congratulations to @printedmatterinc on its 50th anniversary as the preeminent source for artists' publications worldwide. I am so sorry not to be in New York for the festivities this evening. I spent so many years, from 2002 through 2013, first as Director of the institution and then founder and Director of the @printedmatter_artbookfairs . What an exciting and gloriously chaotic time that was. I miss Printed Matter so much! I love Printed Matter. I am so happy to have dedicated a decade to this magnificent organization. I am especially proud of our #queerzines exhibition and publication, which traveled widely. A special thanks to our board chair during this period, Phil Aarons, without whom none of this would have happened. Now we are in another era. Like Joseph Beuys in the 70s, many of us are unwilling to enter the country, and so I send this video instead. Happy Birthday Printed Matter! I LOVE YOU! #printedmatter #queerzine #artistsbooks Thank you to @ggglonggg for inspiring and editing this video.

Here I am in the lobby of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Canada. I first began visiting the NGC in grade 10 high school in 1960, and it is there that I first encountered life-changing artists, like Andy Warhol, Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Marisol, and Robert Ryman. More recently, the NGC initiated an enormous retrospective of @generalidea_ , which traveled to the @stedelijkmuseum and also @gropiusbau Berlin, curated by Adam Welch in Canada and Beatrix Ruff in Europe. Now the gallery is in a fallow period, with many curatorial positions empty and the galleries very quiet. The lobby is rather sad, and the hallways grey with the strange light of late-winter weather. The gallery seems to be resting between its rich past and an unknown future. My cane (thank you @ggglonggg ) makes echoing stacatto noises on the silent marble. #ottawa #canadianartist #nofuture

Portrait of me by @pinkmince over lunch at @sissi_restaurant during Easter (think #leather ) week in #berlin . He caught an expression which I realize now is probably characteristic and yet I realize I have never seen it before. It is unfamiliar yet deeply familiar. But what is it? I find myself in a warped unfamiliar world that is utterly strange to me. I don't mean Berlin but the Western hemisphere in the 21st century. It is clear to me that as an artist I do not belong in the category of contemporary art but rather historical art. The 2020's are a complete mystery to me. The current relationship between art and money is particularly bizarre. Perhaps I am entering a new era in my life or perhaps just winding down. I have no idea. I am grateful for all my dear friends, those with us still, whether in spirit or flesh and blood. This is Sunday morning, after all.

Arriving at the preview at @gropiusbau Berlin for the exhibition of @peterhujararchive and @lizdeschenes . It is a beautiful exhibition and Hujar is sublime as always, and yet, one wonders ... where are the penises? The pairing of the two artists is interesting but in the end fails to ignite. But one has to admire the attempt. My thoughts on Hujar are always enflamed by the memory of his smoldering eyes that Saturday he tried to pick me up at an opening in downtown New York circa 1975 (which gallery was that?). So tall, dark and handsome! But I said no, much to the amusement of his friends. But do I say yes to this exhibition today? Perhaps. Photo: Fafa Amous #peterhujar #lizdeschenes #gropiusbau
