BRONCHIECTASIS Excuse me what’s that? Brong-kee-EK-tuh-siss (pronunciation) Not what anyone wants to hear, especially a cyclist whose lungs are pretty important to performance. What is it? Bronchiectasis is a long-term degenerative lung disease where the airways (bronchi) become permanently widened, damaged, and scarred. This damage prevents the airways from clearing mucus effectively, causing it to build up, which leads to chronic inflammation, frequent bacterial infections, and further lung damage. Treatable but not curable. I was given this news a few weeks ago after my second bout of pneumonia since Christmas. I won’t bore you with the details but I have ALWAYS struggled with my lungs since birth. Now the recurring infections kinda make sense… What does it mean for me? Well to be honest, I’m going to keep training, keep racing and doing what I do (exercise is good for it) as best I can! What I will have to do however, is avoid getting sick or being around people that are ill 🤧! I am already immunocompromised, so this doesn’t really help. Anyway, enough of that boring stuff, let’s get some races planned 😃
