In a landmark move to reshape how disability is portrayed across media landscapes, the Centre for Disability and Inclusion Africa (CDIA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Alliance for Disability in Media and Entertainment (GADIM). This strategic collaboration aims to drive a bold shift in storytelling, amplify authentic voices, and promote inclusive media representation of persons with disabilities across Africa and beyond. The partnership signals a decisive step away from outdated narratives that frame disability through pity, charity, or stereotypes, toward a more accurate, empowering, and human-centered portrayal rooted in dignity, rights, and lived experiences. Under the agreement, both organizations will co-create and distribute compelling multimedia content, that spotlight the diverse realities, achievements, and perspectives of persons with disabilities. The collaboration will also facilitate knowledge exchange for media professionals, and the development of inclusive storytelling guidelines. Read the full press release at the link in our bio. Meet Jonas Karpa (@jonaskarpa ), a disabled journalist and podcast host of Die Neue Norm (@dieneuenorm ), one of our first collaborators at TGDN Network. In this video, Jonas explains the principle of Disability Mainstreaming and why this is at the center of his journalistic work. English transcript: Jonas: Hello, I’m Jonas, I’m 39 years old, I have short, dark brown hair, a beard, and I’m wearing a light green sweater. As a journalist with a disability, it is extremely important for me to apply the principle of disability mainstreaming. Because I believe it breaks down stereotypes and simply shows how important the lives of people with disabilities are.

On this Valentine's Day, GADIM is happy to announce a new social-first documentary series, of which we are the Executive Producer: "In the Midst of ... Love Flourishes." The YouTube series centers trans people in moments of intimacy, partnership, and care. Trailer: /@inthemidstofseries /shorts Created in response to a media landscape that too often frames trans lives through trauma or controversy, the series exists to offer something different… a space where trans people are seen loving and being loved, in community and on their own terms. It is directed by Kai Tillman, a neurodivergent, trans non-binary filmmaker whose working-class roots and years of living on the fringe have shaped their approach to grassroots storytelling. @kai.tillman @sellerton @snackingonset @globaldisabilitynews @rikkipoynter @translawcenter @queernewsdaily @them @nationalnow @earthtokb @jessicaoutofthecloset disableddiscourse @comingout.app @gaystarnews @liberaljane @gaytimes @themixuk

From @priti.salian Priti Salian at @reframing_disability , who has created the Global Directory of Disabled Journalists. @globaldisabilitynews "The idea is simple but necessary: to connect editors, news organisations, and media projects with disabled journalists around the world for paid work, collaborations, and commissions. The directory will live on Reframing Disability’s website and be shared widely, with the hope that it helps reduce some of the structural barriers disabled journalists face, while making it easier for editors to commission more diverse and inclusive journalism. "Through Reframing Disability, individuals from 73 countries are united in reshaping how the media views and includes disabled people. "Why this directory needs to exist Newsrooms regularly say they want to commission and hire diverse voices, but when it comes to disability, the excuse is familiar: “We don’t know any disabled journalists.” "Yes, disabled journalists exist and are working across beats. "Some say they are approached only for “disability stories” and overlooked for other assignments, and some others have their capability questioned and not approached at all. "The result is a media landscape where disability is underreported, misreported, or framed without lived expertise, and where disabled journalists are locked out of consistent, paid opportunities. "This directory exists to remove that barrier and give disabled journalists visibility. "Like the idea? "What can you do? "If you are a disabled student or working journalist, editor, photojournalist, documentary filmmaker, photographer, illustrator – anyone who can contribute to journalism/newsrooms, please submit your details using this form, ideally by mid-February. Entries will be added manually to the directory, in the order they are received, starting after 15 February 2026. The form will remain open indefinitely. "To support the work of @reframing_disability via this link, /reframingdisability "If you prefer PayPal, you can contribute at [email protected]. You can also reply to that email if you’d like to pay via UPI, make a bank transfer, or need an invoice."

The Global Alliance for Disability in Media and Entertainment and Props No More (@gadimorg ) mourn the loss of disability advocate, writer, and colleague Alice Wong: “Alice Wong’s commitment to social justice, anti-oppression, and inclusion is apparent in all her work. The Disability Visibility Project fights against these injustices by providing a platform for oral history and media making that centers authentic conversations about the lived experience of disability. Alice grounded her work from a place of authenticity. She knew that disabled people’s stories matter and that they should come from the disability community directly. Her Disability Visibility Project has actively changed the public’s perceptions of the disability community, serving as a much-needed voice in shaping the narrative about American disability policy and the social status of disabled people. Alice’s disability activism continued beyond the Disability Visibility Project and included her many books on disability, podcasts, The Disabled Writers Project, the #CripLit Twitter chat series and #CripTheVote, a nonpartisan online movement encouraging political participation for disabled people. Over the years, many have tried to bring more visibility nationally to the collective disability community, but Alice Wong had the creativity to truly leverage social media to make that happen. Her presence will be deeply missed.” Beth Haller, Co-Founder of GADIM and Executive Producer of Props No More You can support Alice’s legacy by donating to her GoFundMe and reading and sharing the Disability Visibility Project. Both are linked in our bio. Visual description in the comments.

The @perkinslibraryofficial Perkins Library has your next six summer movie nights booked! Read on for their amazing list of films that make disability representation a priority... 🍿✅ #BlindNewWorld -- #Repost @PerkinsLibraryOfficial : "With Disney/Pixar's #Elio hitting theaters, we'd like to share how much we love seeing characters with disabilities featured on the big screen! Kids with disabilities deserve to watch movies with disabled characters who represent them. Being able to see role models who are like them can have an enormous impact on their self confidence, feelings of belonging, and disability acceptance, especially if an individual doesn’t have the regular opportunity to be around such role models in everyday life. 🎥 Here are several animated movies featuring characters with disabilities: 1️⃣ Elio: Eleven-year-old Elio, who wears an eyepatch in the film, finds that he must bond with eccentric alien lifeforms after they mistake him for Earth’s leader. 2️⃣ #FindingNemo: Nemo, a clownfish with an undersized fin, and Dory, a blue tang with short term memory loss, go on adventures that teach them how to adapt. 3️⃣ #FindingDory: In this sequel, we meet Destiny, a nearsighted whale shark. She often bumps into the walls of her tank, but she excels in more open environments. 4️⃣ #HowToTrainYourDragon: In this series, Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless, form a bond that is strengthened by their shared experiences as amputees and prosthetics users. 5️⃣ #Luca: A skilled fisherman and loving father born with one arm, Massimo becomes a mentor to the film’s main characters, two friendly, but incognito, sea monsters. 6️⃣ Loop: In this short film, Renee, a nonverbal autistic girl, develops a friendship with a fellow camper after the two are paired together for a canoeing activity."
