Peaceful travels to southern soul belter, songwriter, guitarist & producer Clarence Carter who passed away yesterday. He began recording in the early sixties but made his largest mark over at Rick Hall’s Fame Studios /Fame records in Florence, Alabama (muscle shoals). His “back door santa” & “tell daddy” are in regular rotation at funky sole. We give thanks for the music Clarence left all of us.

Peaceful travels to James Gadson who just passed away. A funk drumming master with the voice of an angel and a heart to match.
My condolences go out to his family and close friends.
If memory serves around 2013 or so photographer/documentary film maker Brian Cross @bpleasel kindly introduced me to James and eventually I had the pleasure of being invited to meet him at his home music studio and drum hang out. Eventually i managed to sweet talk him into doing a show with the Breakestra featuring him playing drums and singing songs from his recordings with Dyke and the Blazers, the Watts 103rd Street Band & Bill Withers. It was an absolute thrill & musical highlight to get to play that music with him. I wish there had been more.
Thankfully we caught some footage of the rehearsals as well as the live show at the Funky Sole Weekender in 2018. I hope to find more footage of that beautiful night.
Thank you James for the grooves, laughs and funk. Also very Thankful that we all have your music to remember you by.
