Ustaad Noor Bakhsh band @noorbenju Ustaad Noor Bakhsh - Benju Doshambay - Damburag Daniyal Ahmed @honiunhoni - Damburag Recorded at @chicagoculturalcenter on Sept 22, 2024. Ustaad Noor Bakhsh is from Pakistan’s Balochistan province, hailing from a nomadic family of goat and cattle herders across the Makran, and was born in Gaddani- a coastal town a 90-minute drive from Karachi (my mom’s hometown.) Ustaad is a master on the benju, a part of the folk music fabric in Balochistan. Seeing Balochi music in the gorgeous cultural center atrium was unreal. Special thanks to @chicagodcase for patronizing and hosting music from around the globe, the child in me couldn’t ever imagine today’s world's investment in musical diversity. I’d seen Daniyal’s videos on YouTube for some time and this band was surreal to see live, I couldn’t keep the camera still. Had a really memorable chat with Dushambay bhai after this show. I appreciate Daniyal’s music archivist work and intrepid ethnographies, aside from being a living musical legend. He inspires my own efforts to archive music. There’s a great piece on Ustaad Noor and Daniyal by Sadiya Ansari in the Guardian.

MAVI @mavi4mayor - drunk prayer, the giver (just the top) shot this sometime last summer at West Fest (?) it's just been sitting on my desktop for months. made me smile today. Mavi went sober on tour during 2024 and announced it to the fest, here. There's a nice Rolling Stone piece on that by Andre Gee. )
