Joseph Fucigna, featured in Charged Field, a group exhibition on view April 4 – May 9, 2026 at G-Town Arts, 5 Main Street, Georgetown, CT. Fucigna's Pressed & Squeezed series does exactly what its title promises — and then more. Working in acrylic and clay slurry, the Weston, CT-based artist builds panels into dense, topographic objects: paint and material pressed, squeezed, and coaxed into raised nodules, ridged surfaces, and swelling edges that spill paint over the sides of the support. Each one is a different chromatic world — one riots in electric green dots against a scrubbed black ground; another layers turquoise blobs over a pastel field of pink, yellow and blue; a third buries vivid orange and navy fragments in a lunar gray slurry, edged in hot pink. The fourth pulses peach and chartreuse in looping relief over a crumbling white grid. They want to be looked at from the side — and from the side, the question of what they are becomes genuinely open. The paint wraps the edges, pools and hardens mid-drip, builds thickness that no flat image can account for. These are paintings that have become objects, or objects that insist on being paintings. The wall is just where they happen to rest. Fucigna, who studied with sculptor Sir Anthony Caro and critic Clement Greenberg at the Triangle Workshop, has built a career around exactly this productive confusion: taking modest materials and transforming them through process and play into something that holds both sensory pleasure and formal intelligence at once. The Pressed and Squeezed works are joyful without being lightweight.
