Installation is also creation.
This timelapse of Pánico at AMA-OAS is a reminder: considering installation from the very beginning not only streamlines the technical process, but elevates the work’s presence and meaning.

Modern Movements at Hillyer Gallery brings together Latin American and Caribbean artists in a compelling dialogue of abstraction, politics, and identity. Spanning the 1940s to 1996, the exhibition traces how modernism was not simply adopted, but transformed—reshaped through migration, exchange, and deeply rooted cultural perspectives. What emerges is not a single narrative, but a shared visual language alive with difference.
There’s a striking tension throughout: geometry and emotion, structure and rupture, the local and the global. You can feel these artists both engaging with and redefining Modernism in their own terms.
A standout moment was encountering Roberto Matta’s Hermala II, especially after his recent exhibition at the MOMA—an echo that deepens the experience.
Set within the intimate space of the Hillyer Gallery—renowned for championing both emerging and international voices—the show invites a close, almost personal encounter with the work. Featuring 17 pieces, this exhibition is the result of a thoughtful collaboration between Hillyer and the Organization of American States’ (OAS) Art Museum of the Americas.
If you’re in DC, visit @iaahillyer and see this wonderful exhibition!

When is something a tool, and when is it a weapon?
In “inútil”, @mercedes_theartist recasts guns into sonic and kinetic sculptures, transmuting violence into possibility.
A metal world pulses with the force of power hammers that slam down to make music out of destruction. Blue heads (cast from the artist) are smashed and squished in boxes, feeling the repression of a world that wants to severe you in slow motion.
Sight and sound repeat themselves rhythmically, like a chorus, reinforcing the message: “useless” (inútil) is not failure, but refusing the purpose the world has assigned to you.
Always in awe of you, nena! Congrats on this otherworldly show! 🦾💙
inútil is on view at the @amamuseum until April 19
