Paola Podestá: Conversation with the Artist

This exhibition of textile patchworks by Paola Podestá of Valparaíso, Chile, uses its primary medium for reasons both aesthetic and metaphorical. She addresses issues related to the rights of women, fracking, the depletion of natural resources, immigration, and mental health, using patchwork to reinforce the idea that—much like the fabric scraps in a quilt—our challenges are interconnected and benefit from collective approaches to building a more inclusive and sustainable future for all. She conveys a communal alignment with core objectives of the OAS: human rights, sustainability, and social development.

We are saddened by the passing of Muriel Hasbun (El Salvador, b. 1961, d. 2026) in Maryland on May 13. We are fortunate to have had her as a neighbor during her years of teaching to generations of students at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, and more so to have had her as a friend.
Her evocative toned gelatin prints Nike II (1987) and Sculpted Shroud (1988) are fixtures of AMA’s permanent photography collection. Her piece “Documented: The Community Blackboard” exemplified her particular knack for engaging with the audience, inviting visitors to write their reflections on the AMA walls during its run as part of the Rompiendo Fronteras / Breaking Borders exhibition in 2006. She participated in the Santos y sombras exhibition at the OAS gallery in 1996, and the large-scale Mastering the Millenium: Art of the Americas exhibition for which the OAS collaborated with the World Bank Art Group.
Muriel’s work was a highlight of the Images of Silence: Photography from Latin America exhibition at the OAS in 1989. Her work often transcended national borders, as in the Two Museums, Two Nations, One Identity exhibition held at the AMA and at MARTE El Salvador (2011-12). She shared her unique abilities as an educator through numerous discussions and workshops related with her work. Recently her work featured in one of AMA’s early online exhibitions amid the beginnings of the Covid pandemic, Womxn of the Collection of the Art Museum of the Americas (2021).
Through an intergenerational, transnational and transcultural lens, Hasbun constructs contemporary narratives and establishes a space for dialogue where individual and collective memory spark new questions about identity and place. May she rest in peace, and may her many friends and loved ones find solace in her memory.

The exhibition of colorful textile patchworks by Paola Podestá of Valparaíso, Chile, addresses issues like feminism, fracking, the depletion of natural resources, immigration, and mental health. She conveys a communal alignment with the OAS’s core objectives: human rights, sustainability, and social justice.
“The Invisible Prison: Imprisoned Artists of the Americas” brings together artists who create from Cuban prisons. Its title alludes to the effect these prisons have on society as a whole, fostering fear of gathering, protesting, or even expressing dissent on social media. The OAS Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression monitors the state of artistic freedom of expression in the hemisphere and observes that reprisals against art persist.
