Few underground dance movements encapsulate Britain’s rich melting pot and cosmopolitan pulse quite like UK funky. And few artists embody the genre as fully as Crazy Cousinz.
Originally a collective but now helmed by lead producer Flukes, the artist is responsible for some of the genre’s most beloved hits, from the Kyla-featuring “Do You Mind” remix to “Funky Anthem” and “Bongo Jam”.
Drake sampling “Do You Mind” with the 2016 hit “One Dance” catapulted Crazy Cousinz back into the commercial limelight, but they were an indispensable part of the industry long before this.
Flukes, incidentally, is the man behind several iconic grime instrumentals back when Sony Ericssons reigned supreme at the back of the bus. “Wifey Riddim” for example, or “I Have Nothing”, which was brought back to life last year when it was used in a Central Cee freestyle.
UK funky came later, a vibey counterpoint to grime’s aggression. Stitching together tribal house rhythms, garage weight and broken-beat shuffle with Caribbean soca drum patterns and classic house piano riffs, Crazy Cousinz worked alongside other scene stalwarts like Roska and Champion to carve out a lane that sounded both unmistakably British and proudly diasporic.
You can find its traces across the UK underground continuum. That dynamism, multiculturalism, and urgent imperative to dance. Try standing still while listening to a Crazy Cousinz cut – your knees, hips and feet simply won’t let you. It’s impossible not to dance to, and it’s pretty damn hard not to smile either.
We’ve had shows together over the years up and down the country, including a sold out takeover at Brighton institution Patterns that dropped right as “One Dance” was blowing up worldwide. In the same year they featured on one of our line ups at the seminal Sankeys in Manchester alongside Heartless Crew and Wideboys – a link up for the ages.
This Friday things come full circle, as we welcome Crazy Cousinz to the Queen of Hoxton as part of our ongoing residency. We can’t wait to run it again with one of UK funky’s finest – lubricate those joints, staying stush isn’t an option.
Tickets available on Skiddle and Resident Advisor. See you down there 🫡

Expect UK funky, UK garage, grime + more as we take over our favourite Shoreditch basement once again at the end November.
