I can't believe I'm even typing these words right now. Earlier this week my mother, Phyllis Gilliam, lost her battle against stage IV cancer.
This is even more devastating after the passing of my father two months prior. I feel like I was getting to a place of acceptance in my grief, so this loss has torn an even larger hole in a wound that had just begun to heal. I take peace in the fact that they are no longer in pain and are finally reunited.
At this point, my sister and I are left entirely without parents. Our lives have been completely shattered by the past year and a half of navigating our parents' concurrent terminal illnesses. I've started a new GoFundMe to cover the expenses of planning a second funeral, as well as supporting ourselves navigate a new life without the two pillars of support who molded us into the people we are today.
I don't even know what to say, man. I wish I could hug her and hear her laugh again. I love you so, so much mom. Take care of dad for me ❤️🕊️.
Hey everyone. Long time no see, here’s a life update.
A year and a half ago my father, Murray Gilliam, was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. As his condition deteriorated, I had to step away from this project to take on the responsibilities of being his full-time caretaker.
On January 5th 2026 he passed away. Those who know me personally know that he was my #1 fan. I’m so grateful that I had such an amazing man as my father, and I’m absolutely devastated that he’s not going to be here to celebrate all of the milestones in my future. I’m still processing these emotions and will likely be processing them for the rest of my life.
