How to elevate a bathroom:
- Introduce natural light
- Provide a range of artificial lighting on separate dimmable switching to accommodate a host of high and low light level activities/scenarios
- Maintain a compact footprint - accommodate all program elements efficiently, float vanities, toilets, shelves and benches where possible. Literally elevating fixtures makes small spaces appear larger and more accessible and easier to clean
- Include adequate, intelligent and concealed storage solutions (ie. recessed medicine cabinets, docking drawers and cabinets for electric toothbrushes and hair dryers)
- Integrate proper ventilation; a quiet exhaust fan and operable window are best, pair with an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) to improve overall air quality
- Ensure comprehensive waterproofing strategies, best practices on all surfaces (ceilings included) will help to prevent water intrusion which leads to mold, dryrot, and costly remediation
- Specify a zero (or low) threshold shower; curb-less showers are a cleaner design solution, easier to clean, and better for aging-in-place
- Separate the wc where possible - by room, partition or zone (esp. avoid orienting the toilet directly on axis with the sole bathroom door.)
- Save paper and install a washlet - wc integrated or convertible models available.
- Invest in solid brass fixtures and hardware (in any finish); they feel and look refined and are worth their weight in quality and durability
- Consider radiant floor heating; programmable schedule, duration and manual override
- Choose bells and whistles wisely - hooks, bars, and/or warmers for robes, towels, clothing and jewelry where essential without over accessorizing.
- Last, but certainly not least, work with a trusted architect!

Capped off yesterday with a celebration of our long-awaited 2nd phase of @commhopepdx Hope House project!! Brenda, Linda Jo and Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek, all spoke on the need to work together to reduce the layers of bureaucracy that impede our shelter projects. Big thanks to builder captain Ilya Zagaryuk with UKA, Jason Behunin @buildersfirstsource , and John Voekel our amazing structural engineer @framework.eng who all were instrumental in this one!
Finally, the roof is going in just in time!
