SUPERPOSITION
Residential Addition, Poets Corner, Berkeley, CA
aka ‘little spoon’
A layering of spaces, forms and meaning produce places of plasticity and delightful ambiguity. Architecture becomes the container of flexibility and change.
New vs old, modern vs traditional, open vs closed, transitional vs rigid.
A primary bedroom with en-suite ‘flex space’ and bath to accommodate the lives of a growing family. The flex-space is a porch to a backyard oasis and is designed to feel and function with as much spontaneous adaptation. A reading nook, a work station, a crash pad, a child’s performance space, a place to watch the little ones grow and the world go by.
A former western red cedar takes on a second life as bookshelves, benches and countertops, part of a larger material and color palette referencing serene Minnesotan scenes.
Stay rooted, live smarter.

The liminal state of architecture in construction: a state of becoming, spaces shift, frames vanish, the line between vision and reality blurs, an often fleeting moment, ephemeral but essential, raw edges tell a story #abuildingisnotabuilding #liminalspace #construction #spanishrevival

Concept Design Workshop (In Situ)
Early yet pivotal moments in the schematic design process include collaborative charrettes with our clients. Sketching, gesturing, mocking up scenarios, and supposing arrangements in the spaces they know intuitively and intimately.
Challenges / opportunities here include addressing a 1980’s era architectural expression, discovering ways to penetrate its form and structure, a complete thought tightly wrapped up in a shell very much rooted in a style of the time.
The structure sits on piles over the water in Point Richmond and captures extraordinary views of San Francisco, Marin and the East Bay. Incredibly, the team was on site the morning of the offshore quake and subsequent tsunami warning in early December. Taking advantage of this immediate environment, views, access, light and air afforded are paramount to the process.
Grateful to our clients for their enthusiasm, intellect and critical engagement. This collaborative process continues to affirm our belief that meaningful architecture emerges from the fertile tension between rigorous analysis and intuitive exploration.

The public life of buildings…
San Mateo, CA
B Street
Built in 1923
This preserved and protected structure was once home to a convenience store, bowling alley, music store, barre studio, and now a boutique fitness and training center for golfers. It is part of the 2 block stretch of downtown San Mateo, adjacent to the train station, and closed to through traffic (cars) - a pedestrian pilot project during the pandemic and more recent policy to remain for the next several years, at least. B street is filled with pocket parks, sidewalk cafes, and public art and hosts festivals and community-wide events throughout the year.
Excited to be working with P4G on the golf concept and offering architectural services to the wider San Mateo community.

As a moth drawn to a flame, I keep returning to this image from Dillon Beach. @asolidvoid ’s grasp of the lens needs to be shared. The crafted composition and interplay of light and shadow resemble a painting, evoking a kind of timelessness and ethereal beauty. The work challenges preconceptions about the nature of photography and reminds us of the limitless possibilities of creative expression.
Would make for a stunning magazine cover, btw.
