UP AND OVER
The extension is built in a long format dark brown brickwork, designed to blend with the darker London stock bricks of the original house, but also create a legible addition to the building. Slim piers are formed at the window openings to frame the windows and provide stiffness to the wall. A band of offset brickwork forms a continuous lintel above the windows and creates a play of light and shadow. The roof is planted with sedum and wildflower to create a habitat and also to help the roof blend with the garden when seen from the upper floors.

Super excited to share our recently completed project in the Barnsbury Conservation Area, where a layered extension draws the garden — and the ever-changing aspect of Barnsbury Wood beyond — gently into the home.
The house was renovated throughout, with new additions at ground and lower ground floor. A palette of bronze-toned brick and metalwork shifts in depth and warmth as it moves from house to garden, designed to sit in quiet harmony with the original architecture.

@urban.farm.it have been inoculating wood pulp and shavings sourced by Seb from woodland management and workshop activities.
This waste material is first sterilised to kill off any spores, before being inoculated with Fomes fomentarius (hoof fungus), to allow mycelium to colonise the material.
Once suitably colonised it is then broken up and put into a mould to form a cladding panel. The colours produced are earthy and organic and textures are gnarly! We can wait to see this mounted on the beautifully crafted and sustainably sourced British timber structure. 🪵🪚

An extensive extension of a cottage of the most beautiful stone in an AONB. The design tried to preserve as much as possible form the existing cottage, so the slate on the roof has been reused as well, which started of as a cowshed. The detailing was to Passiv Haus standards and in the surrounding wall bee bricks were specified. The roof is still to be planted to hide the extension even more.
