Hear why Kayla (2025 MYARC cohort member) believes protecting public lands matters! 🌿🌎 Kayla shares how supporting wildlife means protecting the ecosystems they depend on, and making sure we don’t destroy the unique environments that cannot be replaced. Every part of these lands plays a role in keeping nature in balance. 🐾🌱
🌄 May 2nd marked the 2nd anniversary of the 2024 expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument - a huge win for our communities and our future. This expansion increased protections for critical habitat, clean water sources, and cultural landscapes, while helping bring more attention, resources, and long-term stewardship to these mountains.
For API youth in the San Gabriel Valley, the San Gabriels are more than just a backdrop - they are a place to hike, heal, learn, and build community. Protecting these lands means protecting access to nature, cultural connection, and a healthier future for generations to come. 💚
But our public lands are still under threat - from budget cuts, staff rollbacks, and efforts to prioritize profit over protection. The latest round of threats proposes to slash even more USFS resources.‼️
✊ Join us in calling on Congress to protect and fund the San Gabriel Mountains through the San Gabriel Mountains Forever campaign.

Join us for our first-ever CAUSE the Vote Community Run/Walk at the Rose Bowl Loop on Monday, May 25 from 9AM–2PM.
We’re kicking off Memorial Day and the first weekend of early in-person voting with a morning centered on wellness, community, and civic engagement. Come walk or run the Rose Bowl 3-mile loop with friends, family, and neighbors!
In partnership with API Forward Movement (@forwardapi ), the City of Pasadena (@cityofpasadena ), and the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (@lacountyrrcc ). We will have an official mobile vote center onsite so attendees can drop off their ballot or vote in-person right at the loop.
This event is part of CAUSE's Together We Vote: API Get Out the Vote Fest taking place across Los Angeles County from May 23 - June 2. Through community events and neighborhood activations, Together We Vote is focused on bringing voting and civic engagement directly into the spaces where community already gathers. This run/walk is one of many events happening across LA County to build connection, participation, and community.
Participation does not require voting, and this is not an official 5K race. Everyone is welcome. Please share with your friends, families, and local run/walk clubs!

🌱 Our Farm to School program is back for Spring at Kids Town, Bitely Elementary, and Sanchez Elementary! We’re exploring the theme of growth and learning what plants need to thrive: sun, water, air, space, and soil. ☀️💧🌿
Students enjoyed a hands-on lesson by regrowing scallions in water and discovering how plants grow step by step. Classrooms will care for their scallions and later transplant them outdoors. We can’t wait to keep learning and growing together this season! 🪴✨

🌱 Seasonal Produce Highlight: Sugar Snap Peas! 🫛✨
The oh-so wonderful snap peas are a popular, crunchy staple in modern Asian cuisine. They’re loved for their sweet, crisp texture and are commonly prepared using quick stir-fry methods with garlic, ginger, and sesame oil to retain a bright green, blistered finish. 💚
These small but mighty peas are a highly nutritious, low-calorie, and fiber-rich vegetable that promotes heart health, aids in weight management, and boosts immunity. They’re packed with vitamins C and K, helping build immunity, support bone health, and reduce inflammation. Their low-glycemic, high-fiber nature also helps stabilize blood sugar.
Stay tuned for our next seasonal produce highlight!

🌄✨ Earth Month may be over, but we’re still celebrating - happy 2nd anniversary of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument expansion! 🌿🎉
On this day in 2024, President Biden expanded SGMNM by 105,919 acres, building on President Obama’s 2014 designation - now protecting 452,000+ acres of natural beauty, cultural history, and critical habitat. 🏞️
Since 2018, APIFM has been proud to stand with the Nature for All Coalition, uplifting API community voices and fighting for language access in nature and in advocacy spaces. Over the past 8 years, we’ve engaged 4,800+ API community members to help shape this movement. 🏮🌱
This expansion matters because it means: 🌄 more access to nature closer to home 🦋 more protection for wildlife + biodiversity 🌞 more outdoor learning + leadership for youth
But our mountains are under threat - from budget cuts, staffing rollbacks, and proposals that would weaken protections. The latest round of threats proposes to slash even more USFS resources.‼️
💚 Now is the time to defend the San Gabriels.

Our Enroll LA team hosted a fun, interactive Smart Shopping workshop at Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library 🛒🥦
Participants learned the healthy plate model, how to read nutrition labels, and explored serving sizes, calories, and nutrients. They got hands-on experience through our “Label Detectives” activity, where they analyzed food labels and ingredients more closely. Another highlight was the Smart Shopping Hot Pot challenge, where groups were given a $40 budget to build a healthy meal. These activities sparked great conversations about budgeting, nutrition, and food choices. 🍎📊
We also shared CalFresh resources, tips for saving money, and how to shop healthier & seasonally. 💡 The event wrapped with raffle prizes, including 99 Ranch Market gift cards, APIFM tote bags, and meal prep containers for home use.
A big success with lots of learning and community connection 🙌 We’re excited to continue hosting workshops like this soon!

Seasonal Produce Highlight: Gai Choy (Chinese Mustard Greens)! 🥬✨
Gai choy (Chinese mustard greens) is a very common leafy green in Asian foods, especially in Southern China, known for its peppery, bitter flavor, and thick, crunchy stems. It is most commonly used in stir-fries and soups (like Cantonese Gai Choy Tong). It is also widely fermented or pickled for longer storage, becoming a sour and savory condiment that can be added to dishes.
Stay tuned for next Friday's seasonal produce highlight! 🌱
