ON FATIGUE, OVERSTIMULATION & THE FUTURE OF CRITICAL ART: SUSO BARCIELA @forms.follow.function for @a_desk_criticalthinking When burnout becomes the default mode of being, and attention a scarce luxury, how can art speak to a society running on autopilot? In "Activate Airplane Mode", curator and critic Suso Barciela dives deep into the mental exhaustion shaping today's cultural experience. With sharp insight and disarming honesty, he dissects a collective fatigue that numbs both creators and audiences alike a condition that flattens perception, fragments meaning, and turns even the most resonant artworks into disposable content. But instead of mourning the loss, Barciela proposes something different: not resistance, but recalibration. A shift in how we imagine, deliver, and receive critical messages in an overstimulated world. Art that doesn't demand more from our drained minds - but instead offers quiet companionship, subtle revitalization, and rare moments of stillness. "Art needs to slip through the cracks of our prostituted attention. It shouldn't scream louder than notifications, but connect - tenderly, intelligently with an audience too tired to fight." 📖 A must-read for your spring break slowdown Read full article now on A*DESK web, section Spotlight: /spotlight/activar-el-modo-avion/ SUSO BARCIELA: ACTIVATE AIRPLANE MODE 🗓️ New on Spotlight

𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔. That is what I talk about in my latest article for @magazine_refresh.art : "Strip Down to the Bone". It's not about emptying out, but about reaching a point where every stroke, every word, every silence carries just the right weight. Where simplicity is not poverty, but the luxury of one who no longer needs to prove anything. Introducing CEN Member SUSO BARCIELA Critic, curator and art advisor Suso Barciela (Seville, 1995) is a critic, curator, and art advisor specialized in contemporary art, with a career that combines theoretical reflection and curatorial practice. His work explores how art is constructed and circulates within institutional, media, and commercial systems, addressing themes such as visibility, narrative, and the role of the viewer in the artistic experience. He uses writing and curation as tools for critical thinking, understanding art not only as an aesthetic object but as a space for ideas, tensions, and meanings. His approach, both analytical and ironic, stems from the conviction that art is a powerful catalyst for social change and critical reflection. @forms.follow.function

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to present "TMR – Time, Mutation Results" to the public in Lisbon, through an Artist Talk organized as part of my residency at @zaratan.arte.contemporanea In this session, I shared the process behind the publication and the ideas that run through it: the passage of time, transformation, and the mark they leave on bodies, cities, and landscapes. The fanzine combines photography and text to explore how elements like water or erosion remind us of the impermanence of everything around us. Inspired by wabi-sabi philosophy, it seeks to find beauty in mutation and in what many would call "wear and tear" or "ruin." TMR is the result of a collective and sensitive effort: Text and editing: Suso Barciela Photography: Juan Ramón Carreño @_hanbury (London) Sergio Gómez @srger (Seville) Suso Barciela (Lisbon, Seville, Cádiz) I am deeply grateful to Zaratán Arte Contemporânea for hosting me in residence and for creating a space to share and engage in dialogue about artistic processes.

After several weeks of research and creation, I’m happy to present the outcome of my artistic residency at @zaratan.arte.contemporanea , as part of the Festival Múltiplo. Under the title “TMR: Time. Mutation. Results”, I’ll be presenting a fanzine that explores how urban environments across different European cities (London, Lisbon, Sevilla and Cadiz) are transformed by climatic agents —in this case, water—, observing how some embrace change while others resign themselves to it. 📅 Dates & Schedule: 🔹 Open Studio → August 28, 29 & 30, 2025 | 4:00 – 8:00 PM 🔹 Artist Talk → August 29, 2025 | 5:00 PM 📍 Zaratan, Rua de São Bento 432, Lisbon 🌐 www.zaratan.pt If you’re around Lisbon, I’d love to share this moment with you! We can chat for a while and have a beer in my open studio 🥰 A huge thanks to my pillars here: Jesus, Conso, Paula, Sergio, Juanra, Johanna, Gonzalo, Amanda, Jose, Gemma, Luna, Pedro, João & Chiko. This journey would not have been the same without you. THANKS

We are thrilled to be featured in issue 5 of @newartproject_ I have published an article about the fascinating work of @adrian_jorquesss , where I explore his unique way of capturing those corners full of stories—places we all see but few truly know how to look at. "Living witnesses of how we have left our mark—sometimes visible, sometimes almost imperceptible—always inhabiting that blurred line between the natural and the constructed." Adrián, thank you for letting us delve into your creative process (and for reminding us that even the smallest cracks have something to tell). 👏😉 If you want a digital/print copy, visit his link in bio or check this link: /b/12425442-newartproject-issue-5 #NewArtProject #AdriánJorques #SusoBarciela #Magazine

After a long time, I can now announce that the new issue of @piecewithartist magazine has officially been published! 🥹 This is a very special issue, since I have had the honor of being able to write about an artist that I really like and who is also my friend. We were working very hard to coordinate writing the publication, we have spent a lot of time in the studio together, and it is a pleasure that this publication is now seeing the light. @piecewithartist magazine has an international projection, and the fact that this article has remained in our land, Seville, apart from being a source of great pride, suggests that our city has much to offer to the international and contemporary artistic field. Many thanks to everyone involved, many thanks to Sergio, Laura, Goyo, the Swinton Gallery Madrid and above all to the Boss, Manuel. This is very special. You can purchase the magazine through , and also in specialized bookstores such as the store at all Caixaforum centers. @srger @lhaura.rain @goyovn @swintongallery @piecewithartist . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #piecewithartist #srger #contemporaryart #magazine #art #artgallery #artist  #artstagram #dailyart #painting #paintersofinstagram #instaart #instaartist #arts #artgallery #artcurator #gallery #curator #exhibit #artist #painter #artcollections #artcontemporary #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #contemporaryartist #exhibit #artexhibit #artcollection #interview #arts #magazine #artmagazine

@newartproject_ @andreysamarin1 @violetamaya_
