💔 The former and current staff of the Food Chain Workers Alliance are heartbroken that we lost our compañero and dear friend Mahoma López Garfias last week.  Mahoma's work with FCWA member group @laundryworkerscenter started back in 2012 when he supported Hot & Crusty workers throughout a 50-day lockout that ultimately led to a three-year union contract. After that, Mahoma was a driving force supporting workers across NYC and New Jersey, securing victories like earned sick leave and raising the minimum wage. ✊️ Last week, LWC shared: "Under his leadership, the LWC grew its power, joining coalitions with the Food Chain Workers Alliance, the Excluded Workers Fund, and many others. Even until last week, Mahoma was doing what he loved most: discussing strategy and finding ways to reach more workers." In our Alliance spaces, we could always count on Mahoma to show up and bring people together, whether he was making art at the annual summit or leading discussions on how to build worker-led campaigns and independent unions. He never hesitated to roll up his sleeves—always there for setup and cleanup. Mahoma was someone we could always count on. We have lost a brother and a friend. An irreplaceable and deeply valued member of our community. Our movement is truly stronger because of him and we continue this work in his honor. ¡Mahoma, Presente! 🕯❤️✊️

We join fellow organizations, unions, workers, students and artists calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and the violence and genocide targeting Gazans, including an immediate ceasefire and end to the 16-year blockade.  Palestinian trade unions are calling for the international labor movement to take urgent action. We join our partners at @healfoodalliance in calling for food and farm justice organizations to take action to oppose this genocide, and the United States' role in funding it: /heal-statement-of-opposition-against-genocide/  #LinkInBio🔗 Artwork by Natalie Hanahara

📊 NEW REPORT! We spent eight months analyzing data from @usdol , the Bureau of Labor Statistics and @uscensusbureau for an updated look at the state of food work in 2025. We found that by basically any measure, food workers fare worse than almost all other workers in the United States 👉 bit.ly/FoodWorkerData2025 ~28 million people work in our food system today, and unfortunately this data highlights what we already know: these workers are highly exploited. ▶️ In 2022, food workers were 93% more likely to be food insecure than non-food workers. ▶️ Every year since 2010, the Wage & Hour Division has found more dollars are owed back to food workers than workers in any other industry. ▶️ Injury rates for food production and manufacturing are 50-80% higher than for the average worker. ▶️ Less than 6% of food workers are protected by a union contract. In the service and production sectors, that number is even lower. The U.S. food system relies on this exploitation, which will only get worse with ramped up immigration enforcement and other Trump policies that hurt workers. That's why our members are organizing for worker power across the entire food chain. 🎨 by @aarhughes and @emitxin #LinkInBio🔗

Did you know nearly 70% of workers in the U.S. food system are frontline workers? That’s millions of people growing, packing, transporting, cooking, and serving food every day. Yet many continue to face low wages, unsafe working conditions, and food insecurity themselves. We’re resharing this important report from Growing Justice Fund grantee partner @foodchainworkers because these realities remain deeply relevant right now. The report breaks down the state of food work across the country and highlights why advocating for food worker protections, dignity, and long-term economic stability matters. Take a read. Share wildly. Continue to advocate. Download the report 🔗 in BIO. #FoodWorkers #FoodJustice #LaborRights #FoodSystem #WorkerJustice

Out with @ufcw770 to ask the community to give their input on long waits and short staffing in pharmacies across Southern California! The union is standing up for safe staffing, quality care, and the respect pharmacy workers deserve. If you're tired of long pharmacy lines, take the survey today at ➡️ longlinesshortstaff. org #GroceryWorkersRising

Workers and environmental advocates have been fighting these proposed line speed increases for years. USDA is mischaracterizing research and deflecting responsibility for the workers their rules directly impact. Good insights from @venceremos.arkansas , @ufcwunion , @centerforbiodiv , @foodandwaterwatch and Debbie Berkowitz. Full article at the #LinkInBio

Across the food system, far too many jobs are defined by low wages, unsafe working conditions and inadequate benefits. This means that the people who grow, pick, process, and serve our food cannot afford to nourish themselves and their families. We stand in solidarity with labor movements and workers around the world who are organizing and advocating for fair treatment, dignity, and economic justice. Everyone deserves to afford nutritious food and be treated with respect and fairness in the workplace. Follow our partners @foodchainworkers , @friendsatc , and @nfucanada to learn more and get involved. #MayDay #InternationalWorkersDay

Today is #WorkersMemorialDay🕯 and the dangers to 28 million workers across the U.S. food system are mounting. We know that agriculture always ranks high on lists of the most dangerous sectors for workers. But warehousing, manufacturing, retail, and hospitality are part of the food system as well, and they were all in the top ten of @aflcio 's list of occupational fatality rates by sector in their 2025 "Death on the Job" report. For more info on worker safety, check out the @nationalcosh 2026 #DirtyDozen report on the most dangerous employers in the U.S., the @economicpolicy "Holding the line" report on federal worker protections under attack, and: Our own data report: Food Chain Workers in 2025: Labor and Exploitation in the Food System, at bit.ly/FoodWorkerData2025 All available at the #LinkInBio 🕯❤️✊️
