Ruwangi “Roo” Amarasinghe is a talented illustrator, visual artist, and muralist based near Sri Lanka’s South Coast. A graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design in 2011, Ruwangi has since focused her career on illustration and painting, bringing her unique vision to a wide range of projects. Her artistic journey is deeply influenced by her diversely artistic family, from whom she inherited and honed her skills. As the head illustrator at Fold Media Collective, a creative group that has been collaborating since 2012, Ruwangi has contributed her vibrant style to various projects, including children’s books, album cover art, scientific journals, and cookery books.
In addition to her work at Fold Media Collective, Roo serves as the creative designer for Smoke & Bitters, one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars located in Sri Lanka. Her versatility as an artist is further showcased in her canvas paintings, where she predominantly works with acrylics but also explores other mediums such as ink, charcoal, pastels, and markers. Known for her surreal and fantastical style, Ruwangi’s art is distinguished by its use of vibrant colours and a distinctive approach that captivates viewers. Her contributions to Sri Lanka’s first electronic music label, Jambutek Recordings, and her involvement in notable music festivals and art exhibitions like Pettah Interchange, Imago Mundi, Colomboscope, and the Alchemy Festival, further underscore her impact on the local art scene.
Ruwangi’s personal work is deeply inspired by her fascination with the cosmic universe, human consciousness and emotions, science fiction, and nature. These themes are vividly reflected in her ongoing digital story series, Space Motel, where she explores these concepts through her imaginative and visually striking illustrations. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Roo remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of her creativity, creating art that resonates on both an emotional and intellectual level.
