"For 'Kitty' we really wanted to feel like we were in our main character's heightened world, so I knew I wanted to shoot large format and be able to get the camera really close to our actors, without having to use diopters. The Pancros have always been a favorite lens of mine so the Taylor Hobsons were the obvious choice to get the look of the older Pancros on full frame and with the amazing improvements in close focus from the No. 9 Optics housings."

Richard Gale Clavius FF lenses now available for hire 🎬
At the heart of the Clavius set is a true icon: the legendary vintage Russian 58mm f2 Helios, beloved for its dreamy swirly bokeh and bold, flaring personality. In this set, it’s beautifully rehoused — and serves as the optical soul of the 28mm, 38mm, and 88mm, each built around that same Helios magic by Richard Gale Optics.
All four lenses share that signature look, with interchangeable aperture inserts for anamorphic-style bokeh while keeping the ease of spherical shooting. Finished with smooth long-throw focus, true internal focus, 95mm fronts, and PL mounts — it’s vintage character, refined for modern cinema.
The @no.9optics Taylor Hobson VistaVision lenses were used recently on a commercial for Edelweiss Pianos. For Cinematographer @jakobcizic , they were the natural choice for this project.
"I’d been speaking with Eddie at @no.9optics for some time about the Taylor Hobson Vista Primes, and had the chance to test a couple of focal lengths while the set was still being completed. I fell for them immediately.
At the heart of this film is the relationship between a grandson and his grandfather, with the piano acting as a conduit for their connection. Visually, it needed to carry a sense of nostalgia while still feeling contemporary.
The Taylor Hobsons felt like an obvious choice. Their modern housing and engineering give them the reliability and performance of contemporary lenses, yet they retain the character and idiosyncrasies you associate with vintage TH or early Cooke glass. Those qualities become more pronounced as you open them up, but they never tip into feeling overly soft—there’s a reassuring consistency across the set, even wide open.
Although the final delivery was 16:9, we shot in 4:3, and the images in that format are stunning. I’m already looking forward to working with them again very soon."
