Join us tonight, Thursday, June 27 at 6pm at @centerforarch for a discussion of architectural practice in the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This program is organized in conjunction with Spatializing Reproductive Justice, on view this summer at the Center for Architecture. In conjunction with the two year anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, the co-curators of Spatializing Reproductive Justice will engage a panel of women in practice in a discussion at the intersection of the architecture profession and reproductive health. The speakers will give insight into how various firms and organizations have responded to the post-Dobbs circumstances and uncertainties. Register via @centerforarch website Speakers: Suzy Genzler, CHID Certified Healthcare Interior Designer and Design Researcher, Ewing Cole; Program Director, Master Of Professional Studies In Healthcare Design, New York School of Interior Design LarriJo Boone, Design Researcher and Clinical Expert, Ewing Cole Amy Garlock, Associate Principal, SOM; Supervisor, SOM Women’s Initiative Julia Murphy, Managing Partner, SOM; Co-Founder, SOM Women’s Initiative; Board of Trustees, Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation Tizziana Baldenebro, Executive Director, Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation Discussion moderated by SRJ co-curator, @lindsayharkema Spatializing Reproductive Justice is a traveling exhibition and programming series that aims to spread awareness of the inequities of reproductive care in the United States and the agency of design fields to expand access. The program volumes of the recycling center address the community needs while adding two moments to enhance the experience on the site: the greenhouse cafe and the beacon. All volumes are connected by a circulation and service spine. This spine serves as the main circulation and also contains storage, washrooms, kitchen areas, rainwater collection, and plumbing and mechanical systems (geothermal). The additional programs (lighthouse and greenhouse cafe) aim to create a sense of place and to connect with both locals and visitors. #moltun #compost #recycling #lakemyvatn #pingeyjarsveit #iceland #communityhouse

Lighthouse interior looking up. The lighthouse is envisioned as a beacon for the community, adding light to a place that is dark for much of the year. When the center is open, the lighthouse will always be lit. #lighthouse #recycling #communityhouse

The construction of all buildings is designed for easy assembly and disassembly, allowing for future fluctuations in the rural population of Þingeyjarsveit. The building elements can be moved to a new site; the concept of reusing materials for future purposes is inherent in the design. The volumes are raised on steel auger piles, creating a light footprint, gently touching the land.

View of primary entry and circulation spine. Inspired by the surrounding terrain, parts of the roof “peel” off the ground, creating moments of walkable roof space. #lakemyvatn #recycling #compost #communityhouse #iceland

Thinking back on our proposal for a community recycling center in rural Iceland near Lake Mývatn. Featured here is the greenhouse cafe with a glass-encased composting system, including vermiculture, revealing and celebrating the four stages of organic waste decomposition to make nutrient-rich soil. In Iceland, the Huldufólk (elves) are not only protectors of nature but also the creatures and processes associated with nature. Cycles of life and death are revered with awe. Decay is a vital process, which allows the old to nourish the new. In this project, we recognize these cycles of decay – like composting – as a way of thinking and designing. We reimagine age-old techniques and implement existing, salvaged and ecological materials to breathe new life into the site. #moltun #compost #soil #lakemyvatn #iceland #recycling

We’re so grateful to have been part of the cross-institutional studio collaboration “Architecture + Reproductive Justice” and for the opportunity to work alongside @labrown Lori Brown at Syracuse University, @lindsayharkema @spaces_of_exception Lindsay Harkema at City College New York, and @bryony_roberts_studio Bryony Roberts at Columbia GSAPP. Thank you also to all the students for their thoughtful insights, research and incredible design projects! We’re thrilled to feature this body of work in the traveling exhibition “Spatializing Reproductive Justice” forthcoming in Fall 2023 - 2025. As it moves to universities and venues in both safe and restrictive states, the exhibition will gather research and design work, further growing the interdisciplinary network of designers, students, healthcare providers and advocates addressing issues of reproductive justice. More information to come soon.

The Architecture + Reproductive Justice student projects explored spatial strategies to support those in need of maternal and reproductive health care. Their proposals included converting train cars in India into a mobile clinic providing a range of medical, educational and mental health services; housing to support those traveling for care; and mobile health units that plug into existing infrastructures on federal land. These speculations slip between judicial boundaries and nestle within spaces of exception. @bryony_roberts_studio @spaces_of_exception_ssa @lindsayharkema @labrown Image credits: 1-2 - Project by Rhidi Chopra, Columbia GSAPP studio 3 - “Away, At Home” by Chi Chi Wakabayashi, Columbia GSAPP studio 4-5 - Project by Valeska Abarca, Mauricio Guidos and Nathaly Castillo, CCNY studio 6 - “Embodied Transitions” by Leora Santoriello, CCNY studio 7 - Project by Jacqueline Pothier, Columbia GSAPP studio 8-9 - Project by Victoria Vardanyan and Gaem Saensopa, Syracuse studio 10 - Project by Labiba Nazrul, CCNY studio
