We are delighted to announce the 2026-2028 Linchpin grantees! The Fleishhacker Foundation’s Christine Elbel Linchpin Grant Program provides three years of unrestricted support to key Bay Area arts service organizations that help local artists to do their important work. These critical organizations serve thousands of Bay Area artists and arts workers each year through fiscal sponsorship, advocacy, training, workspace, and so much more. The program is named in honor of our former Executive Director Christine Elbel, who launched it in 2017. Congratulations to 2025 Eureka Fellow Pilar Agüero-Esparza (@pilar.aguero.esparza ) on her upcoming exhibition Cut / Woven / Spoken, being presented at the Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery at UC Santa Cruz. Drawing on materials and processes rooted in her upbringing in a shoemaking family, Pilar’s work engages the craft tradition of huarache-making (Mexican indigenous sandals). Her current practice revolves around repetitive gestures like the weaving of leather, the hammering of nails, and the meticulous painting of finishing details. The tangible presence and symbolic potential of these materials and gestures inspire her to analyze the creation of objects, their makers, and the physical or social conditions involved in their production. Featuring two weekends of world premiere performances and celebrations of Caribbean arts and culture, the 18th Annual CubaCaribe Festival of Dance & Music kicks off soon! Weekend One: June 7 - 9 at Dance Mission Theatre in San Francisco. Inspired by this year’s theme — Acts of Resistance, Acts of Joy, seven local dance companies will create original choreography rooted in the Caribbean and its Diaspora exploring the questions: Where are the two acts visible in your culture? How do we resist? How do we find and express joy?   Weekend Two: June 14 - 16 at ODC Theater in San Francisco. Choreographers Ramón Ramos Alayo of Alayo Dance Company and Marcia Treidler of ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco collaborate to present an evening-length piece investigating Brazil and Cuba’s history and significance with Carnaval, specifically to the African heritage and culture, deepening understanding of the cultural legacy of Blocos, Cabildos and comparsas in Carnaval and how they have historically functioned as forms of resistance and power and expressions of joy. Congratulations to the creative team, cast, and crew of Larry the Musical! This new hit show follows the often-overlooked story of labor leader Larry Itliong and the Filipino American farmworkers who organized the 1965 Great Delano Grape Strike, which teamed with the Mexican labor movement to win better pay and benefits for agricultural workers and led to the formation of the United Farm Workers. It also offers compelling historical portrayal of Filipinos from the 1920s-1970s. Performances through April 23 at Brava Theater. Tickets are selling quickly.
