We’re delighted to welcome Aleen Sparrow to FLEET: Foreshore! ✨🧶 Aleen will be working in the studio until July 9th. Aleen Sparrow is a Musqueam weaver who learned her practice from her mom, Debra Sparrow. She grew up watching her mom & aunties weave together at the kitchen table, where wool, tea and conversation were always present. Those moments shaped how she understands weaving today, not just as making blankets, but as time spent together, sharing knowledge and supporting one another. During her residency Aleen will be working on mountain goat wool processing, spinning sheep’s wool, and weaving ceremonial blankets. 📅 OPEN STUDIO DAYS: Drop in between 1-3pm, visit with the artist & see what she’s making. You’ll notice the “FLEET is Open” sign :) May 14, 15, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27, 29th June 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 17, 22, 24, 26, 29th July 2nd Details about July workshops coming soon (including one offered by Aleen’s mom, Debra Sparrow!) For more info visit fleetstudios.org. FLEET: Foreshore is located near The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre’s Observatory, The Museum of Vancouver, and the Sen̓áḵw Towers, in Vanier Park. Today is Day 1 of my residency at Fleet studio located at the village of Senakw. Acknowledging our Sḵwx̱wú7mesh relatives while also acknowledging our səlilwətaɬ relatives and my xʷməθkʷəy̓əm ancestors who lived on this land. Beyond colonial maps and titles, this land remains a place of connection for all of our people. Spinning mountain goat wool today and experimenting with making ties for our Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw family up island. Details on drop in hours coming soon!

We’re excited to welcome Christina Capilano to FLEET: Foreshore! Christina will be working in the studio until May 3, 2026. 🌸🌿 Christina is from the Mathias family of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation. Art such as beading, weaving, carving, regalia making, and design all allow her to feel connected to her heritage and closer to her ancestors. She will be working on pieces for the nearby Sen̓áḵw Towers in FLEET: an area rug for Tower 3 and a metal inlay for the village grounds that will be visible from the Burrard Street Bridge. Christina’s work is inspired by Sḵwx̱wú7mesh legends, land, and history. In her words “I want people to be able to look at the work and say, ‘This is Sen̓áḵw, this is Vancouver, this is home.’ I want it to feel welcoming.” This is the first in a series of residencies in partnership with Nch’ḵay̓. Community Drop-in Days: FREE! Everyone is welcome 📅 Sunday April 5th from 1-3pm: ‍Meet the artist, and her family! Christina & her family welcome everyone to join them for this special afternoon where they will share songs, drumming, and their knowledge of the history of the lands upon which Sen̓áḵw rises. This Saturday is the final workshop and performance by UNNAMED BAND and & Other Ways at FLEET: Edmonds! 🎤🍃 The workshop “Fold, Knot, Dye” with Sena Cleave will run from 12-3PM and be followed by an improvised sound, music, and textile performance from 3:30-5:30PM by UNNAMED BAND ~ Barbara Adler, Anju Singh, Toni-Leah C. Yake, and Julia Ulehla. Participants will be folding, tying, and knotting fabric in shibori patterns, and will dye the fabric using plants and food scraps grown locally or that are easily accessible. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique that creates repeating patterns of circles, lines, grids, and more. Like tie-dye, it involves creating a resist by folding and knotting fabric so that only parts of it take on colour. All RSVP’s for this workshop are now filled but any extra material is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. For more info visit fleetstudios.org! These offerings are free. Join UNNAMED BAND at FLEET:Edmonds today, August 14th, from 1-2 pm for their first Open Studio! 🎶 UNNAMED BAND is an interdisciplinary collective of four artists—Anju Singh, Toni-Leah C. Yake, Julia Ulehla, and Barbara Adler—who will experiment with music, sound, writing and textiles. They will engage the public in sharing sessions with the aim of fostering relationships with ancestors, stories, dreams, technologies, natural processes and care labour. The soft poetic nature of textiles offers the artists a format for collaboration that ‘perforates the self,’ allowing for mutual exploration and an interest in the influence of unseen forces that surround them. The collective is starting the project with research led by Yake that is inspired by 19th century poet E. Pauline Johnson/Tekahionwake’s retelling of the story "Deer Lake" shared by Chief Joe Capilano. The artists will be experimenting with ‘proto-scores’ inspired by Tekahionwake’s regalia. Open Studios: & Other Ways: August 16, 23, 31, 12-5pm (the collective will be in & out during this time.) UNNAMED BAND: August 14, September 11, 18, 25, 1-2 pm For more info visit fleetstudios.org! @bbyartgallery  @other_sights  @theonlyanimaltheatre  @toni.leah.c.yake  @whatismakingussick  @tenthousandwolves  @tristan_sb  @irohasena #FLEETMobileArtistStudios #FLEETEdmonds #BurnabyEvents #EdmondsPark #BurnabyActivities #theonlyanimaltheatre #&otherways #UNNAMEDBAND
